144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. "
算是第二篇issue了,求指点,感激~
The author claims that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. I agree with this statement insofar as artists do create some great works of permanent value. At the same time, however, by evaluating and analyzing art works, critics are instrumental to either the advancement of art or the facilitation of the public comprehension of art works, which also carry during merits to any society.
I concede that artists deserve to be adored for their masterpieces of enduring value.
To illustrate, the Mona Lisa from da Vinci has captivated the people all over the world since it emerged; the Fate Symphony from Beethoven has encouraged so many people who are anguished by adversity; the Robinson Crusoe from Defoe has show people how strong the human will could be in a hopeless plight; the Titanic from Spielberg has moved billions of people by the heartbreaking love story between Ross and Jack.
On the other hand, however, critics have their own special merits to society. As the fruition of critics are always comments, judgments and the like, which are attached to other concrete art works, their value are by and large vague for the public. In fact the contribution of critics to our society is considerable and of lasting value. In the first place, it is the critics who evaluate the works of artists that serve to make masterpieces well-known to the public and in turn benefit the society, as well as inhibit the inferior works from bothering people. Frankly speaking, most ordinary people without special knowledge cannot fully perceive the subtlety of art works, especially those that are just a random reflection of an instantaneous idea of artists, in the absence of the illustration from critics. Consider the works from those impressionism painters, such as Manet, how many laymen could know what their paintings are really about. Although at times the unfair judgment from critics could slay a great work, the excavation of such hidden gems still relies on the reevaluation by other sensible critics. For supporting information, one need look no more than Van Gogh, whose works were not appreciated by coeval critics. However, with the awareness of their merits by modern critics, Van Gogh has been hailed as one of the greatest painters in history and nearly all his paintings are among the most valuable arts. In the second place, the expertise of critics can usually go a long way towards the progress of the unskilled young artists by pointing out the drawbacks of their works. Without doubt, those young artists could benefit much from the comments from critics
In sum, although the light of excellent works from artists could flare for hundreds or thousands of years, the intangible contribution from critics to our society are also worthy of being adored.(后面有些写不动了~) |
