144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. "

算是第二篇issue了,求指点,感激~

The author claims that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. I agree with this statement insofar as artists do create some great works of permanent value. At the same time, however, by evaluating and analyzing art works, critics are instrumental to either the advancement of art or the facilitation of the public comprehension of art works, which also carry during merits to any society.

I concede that artists deserve to be adored for their masterpieces of enduring value.
To illustrate, the Mona Lisa from da Vinci has captivated the people all over the world since it emerged; the Fate Symphony from Beethoven has encouraged so many people who are anguished by adversity; the Robinson Crusoe from Defoe has show people how strong the human will could be in a hopeless plight; the Titanic from Spielberg has moved billions of people by the heartbreaking love story between Ross and Jack.

On the other hand, however, critics have their own special merits to society. As the fruition of critics are always comments, judgments and the like, which are attached to other concrete art works, their value are by and large vague for the public. In fact the contribution of critics to our society is considerable and of lasting value. In the first place, it is the critics who evaluate the works of artists that serve to make masterpieces well-known to the public and in turn benefit the society, as well as inhibit the inferior works from bothering people. Frankly speaking, most ordinary people without special knowledge cannot fully perceive the subtlety of art works, especially those that are just a random reflection of an instantaneous idea of artists, in the absence of the illustration from critics. Consider the works from those impressionism painters, such as Manet, how many laymen could know what their paintings are really about. Although at times the unfair judgment from critics could slay a great work, the excavation of such hidden gems still relies on the reevaluation by other sensible critics. For supporting information, one need look no more than Van Gogh, whose works were not appreciated by coeval critics. However, with the awareness of their merits by modern critics, Van Gogh has been hailed as one of the greatest painters in history and nearly all his paintings are among the most valuable arts. In the second place, the expertise of critics can usually go a long way towards the progress of the unskilled young artists by pointing out the drawbacks of their works. Without doubt, those young artists could benefit much from the comments from critics

In sum, although the light of excellent works from artists could flare for hundreds or thousands of years, the intangible contribution from critics to our society are also worthy of being adored.(后面有些写不动了~)

The author claims that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. I agree with this statement insofar as to provide society with some works of permanent value is one main goal of most artists. At the same time, however, by evaluating and interpreting art works, critics are instrumental to either the improvement of artists’ level or the public comprehension and appreciation of art works, both of which carry during merits to society.

Admittedly, to create arts of lasting value to society is what most great artists pursue(are bent on;bend themselves to;commit oneself to).  To illustrate, the Mona Lisa by da Vinci has captivated the people all over the world since it emerged. The Fate Symphony by Beethoven has encouraged so many people who are anguished by adversity. The Robinson Crusoe by Defoe has show people how strong the human will could be in a hopeless plight. The Titanic by Spielberg has moved billions of people by the heartbreaking love story between Rose and Jack.

On the other hand, however, arts critics have their own special merits to society. The first is to help the masses understand and appreciate work of arts by virtue of their expertise. By and large, most ordinary people without special knowledge cannot fully perceive the subtleties of art works, especially those that are just a random reflection of an instantaneous idea of artists, in the absence of the interpretation from critics. Consider the works from those abstract expressionist painters, such as the most expensive painting in the world-No. 5, 1948- by Jackson Pollock, how could laypeople know what those strange arrangements of lines, figures and colors in his painting are really about?

Another merit of critics is that critics’ evaluation of an art work could serves to help people determinate which art works are worthy of attention and which are not. For example, when people plan to choose a movie to watch, most of them are used to seeing the film reviews of these movies from critics and then make the final decision. Moreover, although the judgments from critics are not always reliable and they even might slay great works, the excavation of such hidden gems still relies on the reevaluation by other sensible critics. For supporting information, one needs look no further than Van Gogh. Although Van Gogh sold only one of his paintings through his entire career, as his works were not appreciated by coeval critics, nowadays most of his paintings are among the most valuable arts in the world.

The third merit of critics that we should not be blind to is that critics can usually go a long way towards the progress of artists, especially those rookies, by pointing out the drawbacks in their works. As we know, due to the limitation of individual vision and knowledge, artists tend to overlook some flaws in their own arts, while critics, who usually possess expertise and keen (subtle) insight, could serve as a competent “fault finder”.

In sum, although masterpieces of artists do could enlighten the entire world and blaze the history for hundreds of thousands of years, critics’ evaluation of work of arts also possess permanent merit in achieving the objects of arts, thereby worthy of being admired.
