“In the age of television, reading books isnot as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watchingtelevision as they can by reading books.”

The statement pointed out that people no longer benefit more by reading than by watching television. However, I suspect that the speaker has overlooked the power of books and overestimate that of televisions. Learning by reading books still has the advantage that can never be taken place by watching television.

As watching television has been regarded as an entertainment for a long time, education via television is just the byproduct of this, in order to please and teach people in a relax and leisureway. Although the efficiency of teaching in some fields, like sport games, cannot be denied, I insist that the theories suggested in books have people better understand, which couldn’t be achieved by television because of the impossibility of showing amounts of words on the screen. Therefore, learning by television only gets the basic knowledge. For a simple example, mathematics cannot be learned by television because if we do that, the program provider will cost lots time and money showing audience the formulas and the derivations. Additionally, memorizing the formulas and the derivations afflicts the audience in contrast to noting in the books. Acting as an entertainment and affording large cost of maintenance limits the function of television, so learning by television can never substitute for learning by reading books.

Learning by reading books is the traditional method of education. First, the relative low cost of printing books leads to comprehensive knowledge about everything. The cost of broadcast an education via television could be millions dollars, while printing books only cost dozens dollars. The cost is the main reason that limit television program but encourage industrial of printing books. The second reason is that teaching by television doesn’t go further than books. Since a educational programconstrict itself to control the cost, it always plays a role as the person only leads you inside of knowledge but never guide you to the center. Here’s a instance of a lecture about history on television in my country. The lecture rise the public’s interest about the history by distorting the truth though it might be benevolent, provoking other historians. Thirdly, people have time to ponder the content in books and make judgments rather than only receive the ideas delivered by television programs. Thus, we learn much more rather than hearing from same voice.

In conclusion, learning by reading books still plays the most important role in education. Although television programs can teach in a funny way, neither are they able to cover as many fields as books are, nor do they go as far as books do. The statement that learning by television is better than learning totally underestimate books.
