In today's rapid society, there is a growing public concern over the issue of the destiny of society. The speaker in the title statement gives his opinion that the destiny of society depend on how children are socialized, and we do not know how to raise children who can help bring about a better society. At the first glance, the opinion seems to be somewhat appealing. However, the further reflection tells us that the speaker's opinion is not totally correct, as discussed below.
Admittedly, we cannot emphasize the importance of socialization too much. I accepted that unless a child have a favorable socialization process, he will not grow up to be a tolerant citizen, as well as a eminent leader. For instance, school is the key place in the process of children's socialization. In school, children learn communication, cooperation and respect, these characters will insure children have a sound mind and a healthy personality. When children grow up, these social skills will help them to keep a harmonious relationship between others, and it consequently supply a better society to us. In addition, there is an increasing tendency in our society that we show more respect to the homosexuals, mental- and physical-challenged individuals, and different ethnic and racial groups, and there is also a stronger voice that we need more cooperation cross different countries and religions. As a result, it is time our children need a in-depth socialization and use it to solve different problems in the new era.
Although I agree the speaker's first opinion, I insist that the speaker's second assertion, "we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society", is not correct. Actually, from our behaviors, our children have known how to make a better society, and we no need to intentionally teach them. For example, in 2009, the U.N. Climate Change conference opened in Copenhagen, with more than 15,000 delegates and observers from nearly 200 countries attending what is being billed the last best chance for an agreement to combat global warming. It is no denying that the conference is the contemporary people's endeavor to make a better society. When our children know the conference by the mass media, they will be aware of the importance of global warming. In the future, they will also combat to the climate problem, just like today's us. Therefore, depending on our behaviors to make a better society, our children will inherit our essence and devote themselves to make a better society.
In sum, taking into account all these factors, we may safely draw the conclusion that how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society, and we should firmly believe that our children will provide us with a better society. |
