TOPIC: ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."
WORDS: 512 TIME: 00:45:00
[Position]: Chief benefit? Of course not! Illusion? It depends!
1. Histroy is generally a great mine where you can find and exploid whatever you want. So the benefits people get from history study are almost unlimited!
2. History study should provide more benefits in many aspects, and the chief one varies with your purposes of study.
e.g. politics, social systems, medical care, social customs, religions, educations, technologies etc.
3. BTW, how to tell the difference of people in different times depends on the aspects you are examining the people. In other words, people are to be examined by cultural, social, technical, religious and educational aspects. They can be significantly different in one aspect and similar in another.
4. In fact, we all benefit from history study not only ... bu also... During the study of history, what subjest you really care about, what of kind of benefit you might get from it most probably.
I partly fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim since common ground essentially help people to learn more from the history. The common aspects between people essentially improve our understanding of historical events. The discrepancies between people living in different period also grant us a broader view sight and insightful perspective.
Admittedly, we seem to learn more from history when those heroes and heroines' behaviors and characters are similar to ours; after all, human nature remains almost unchanged over extended periods. In fact, history impresses us most with those celebrities. Joan of Arc, Mahatma Gandhi immediately comes to our mind. By leading the torpid French army, Joan of Arc, a teenager with her talent and brave, repulsed the aggressors and revitalized the whole country. Mahatma Gandhi swayed the mass and incited No Violence Resistance. He held his belief and the notion of a ideal country and did not care about the suffering he was going to take. At last, he freed the country and became the immortal. From their stories, we learn many valuable human natures. Inspired by their character, we overcome hardship without hesitation as before.
Moreover, we begin to realize that some historical events are essentially the same to our daily lives by recognizing that human nature has not ever changed. One example aptly illustrates this point involved the Chinese novel--<The Three Kingdoms>, which recorded the wars between three kingdoms in ancient China. In fact, many western business or political leaders often read this book and get many inspirations from it. To hidden your advantage in order to make your competitors underestimate you and hence you would get more development space. To ally with other companies to maintain survival by defending against the strongest competitor. By reading these strategies, leaders stand to learn how to get a lion's share in the market and how to avoid mammoth loss when the loss is inevitable.
However, differences between people living in different periods reveal another valuable aspect of studying history. One striking example is the dynasty reorganization in China. Song dynasty's people place more weight on the education than military force and hence Song dynasty was destroyed by Yuan kingdom whose leader is Genghis Khan. Under the influence of Khan, most citizens tend to send their kids to barracks rather than school. As a result, such extreme imbalance dooms the great empire. As time passes by, Qing dynasty stroke a balance between military force and education and hence became the greatest empire in the world. Understandably, officials as well as populace began to be conceit. Finally the diplomat isolation seduces the empire and Qing dynasty was replaced by the Republic of China. From observing such differences, we learn that history is always selecting the fittest to survive. The differences among people living in different periods also serve to warn us by asking question: What should we do to meet the demand of development of history?
As shown above, the merit of the study of history is not limited. History benefit us well not only by the common ground but also by those discrepancies.
