As the world we live is focusing more and more on the result of every task, some people claim that if a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable. However, this notion is too simple and whether a goal is worthy and a mean is justifiable are based on the gain and cost of that goal or mean, which actually make them much more complicated and subjective so that we have to scrutinize them case-by-case.

First and foremost, we have to define the word "worthy" before all the scrutiny. If a goal can gain more than its cost, we define it as worthy. However, different people always hold different value systems, which means the gain and cost will not stay the same when the goal is tested by different people. For example, in personal level, spending 2 or 3 days and thousands of dollars to buy a ticket for a concert may not be worthy for most people, in which case some crazy fans of those superstars will believe it is worthy. In factory level, the plan that can increase 5 million incomes while cause serious pollution to the environment may be accepted by some small company, which will of course be refused by companies like Apple. In national level, the recommendation to decrease the emission of carbon dioxide will be accepted by developed country, while the developing will reject. So "worthy" is so subjective word that we cannot use it as an absolute standard to test a goal.

Even if we can build an absolute standard for the goals, the cost of different ways to approach it should be taken into account. As we know, different means to finish the same task will cause various costs, like time, money or reputation. So we have to divide the situation into two parts based on whether the goal can determine the final choice itself.

In a few extreme situations, like in the war, the cost will be ultimate if we cannot attain the goal, which means the cost of different means would not influenced the final choice. Thus, no matter what the cost of the means is, the leaders have to use them to get the goal. Take World War II as an example. If the allied countries failed in the war, the world will be controlled by the Nazi and the Jew will be extinct, of which the cost is infinite. Thus, it is justifiable for the allied nations to use any possible way to beat the axis countries, including the A-bomb. Even the A-bomb lead to the slaughter of innocent people in Japan, it stopped the World War II immediately and save ultimate lives of other individuals.

In other situations, like our daily life, the business and political realm, the gain and cost of the goal cannot totally determine the final decision so the cost of means has to be taken into consideration. The examples are all around us. Watergate scandal is one of the most famous scandals in America. In this scandal, Nixon use illegal ways to get the election strategies of Democratic Parties. The goal is to win the election which is reasonable, while the way is not. Nixon obviously neglected the cost of such mean, which finally lead to his resignation. So even when a goal is worthy or even desirable, the cost of the means to attain it has to be taken into account, especially the cost of the mean is big enough to determine the results.

To sum up, a goal is worthy or not differs from individuals so it is groundless to say use the word “worthy’ as an absolute standard. And even we get the absolute standard to test the gain and loss of a goal, it is not enough to claim any means is justifiable. We have to consider the total gain and loss, if we use such means, before claim the means are justifiable.

TS: worth 是取决于gain and cost。是一个很subject和复杂的东西。justifiable也是如此。
1worth的定义,每个人不一样,每个地区,每个国家都不一样。如果有人认为worth而别人不认为那么认为。所以W是个too subject的词语,不能用来作为一个absolute standard
2. even 能制定一个absolute standard,不同的手段也会have different cost。

I cannot agree with this topic, because there are many way to achieve the goal, but not everyone is right. We need to think about the influence for the way we choose. Only the reasonable way is justifiable.【这段只针对了题目后半句,而且太简单了点吧】

First, we have to define what kind of goal is worthy, everyone always consider their goal is worthy. In my opinion, the worth goal should have some features, such as reasonable and legal. In our society, many people use the way to hurt others in order to achieve their goal. They should be tried in court【没明白】 and set as an example for the descendent. From the power of atomic bomb by the history of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we understand the cost of war deeply. After the explosion, the two cities turned into a purgatory and all the buildings were destroyed. From this example, we also know that even the goal is worthy which is also need to be considered.【没明白】
America decided to drop the atomic bomb in order to accelerate Japan's surrender was not the reasonable waywhy?】. Carl Lewis is another example, Carl Lewis was the one of Olympic championships, he won 10 Olympic medals include 9 gold. From 1979 to 1996, he won 23 medals in the international games【用复杂句合并了比较好】. But in 2003, he was found use the drugs in the 1988 Olympic games. It is unfair to other athletes which were competed with himathletes competed with him. Although the Olympic committee not took any measures to carl lewis but people has lost faith in him. From the example above, we know that not every way is justifiable.

Moreover, there are many ways to achieve the goal, but not every one is
samereasonable/justify/acceptable. Other methods maybe not suit for us. We can learn from the history, the colony always be retrieved and treat as the same【不明白】. But the way is not suitable to Hong Kong. The policy named "one country, two systems" in china is unique one. It is never happened in history. Hong Kong is a part of china, in order to keep the harmony in Hong Kong. The government makes the decision about Hong Kong people ruling Hong Kong. This is the unique way in the world and both Hong Kong and the mainland will be more glorious and more successful in this great principle. So the suitable way is the best one.【题目是问是否所有的way都是justifiable,你来个合适的way是最好的。有点偏。在本段末尾向题目再靠拢下比较好】

The cost for the goal should be reasonable and legal【和第一个body段落重复了】. In my opinion, every success also needs the attitude of insistent. In china, Chen Jing run is a great mathematician which is researching on the Goldbach conjecture more the ten years and making a great contribution on the mathematic. Deng Xiaoping said that”if there are one thousand scientists like Chen Jing run in china, it is extraordinary.” This example tells us that behind of every success are a great deal of effort.【没看出来和题目的关系,感觉是字数不够就生拉硬扯的写了一段。。。。is型号的issue你来个should段落。。。重写一个吧

To sum up, before we decide to achieve a goal, we need to think several question, is it the goal reasonable and legal? How can I achieve it? Weather the way is effect and legal? If all the answers for the question above are yes, just do it and never give up!is型号的issue别用should的话语来结尾。另外,原来你最后一段是这个意思。。。重新找个body段落吧。】

TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 715

It seems so reasonable that one could take any means to attain a worthy goal. However, after my careful thinking about this statement, I couldn't agree the author insofar. In the first statement, the author fails to conclude anything is worthy or unworthy, and in the second statement, the author fails to consider the harm it would bring if any means were taken to get some one's goal.

First of all, to judge one thing is worthy or not is a subjective judgment. People tend to regard things benefit to him or herself are worthy. Whether something is worthy or not, it depends on one's personal value system and interests. However, it happens often that somebody done something worthy in his or her own idea while it truly harms others' right. For instance, Adolf Hitler has killed thousands upon thousands innocent people in the World War 2. In which he thought it was his own pursuing, but the whole world paid a heavy price for him to pursue this so called worthy career. Hitler brought pains and blood to this world during that period and made normal persons lost their beloved, made soldiers became disabled after wars, not mention how many people died in this whole tragedy. And as to the Japan in 20th century, this nationality has attacked a pile of countries in Southeast Asia, which brought a disaster to Asia in a long run. But the only reason for Japan to do so was her desire of being a host of the whole Asia which she regarded as a worthy goal. Therefore, chances are that unfairness would happen any time and any where if the kind of worthy is out of focus. Since we couldn't give a clear explanation to what is a worthy goal, we could hardly come to an agreement that everyone could benefit from a same goal.

Secondly, harm would come up with the any means taken to some goals and sometime it last for a long time even harms the stability of a whole society. Nixon, who abused his power to spy the meeting of Democratic Party in order to maintain his position of a longer period of time, has come up with the matter of Water Gate scandal. This eventually led to his resignation from the presidency and destroyed the image of government in the mind of its citizens that aroused significant distrust in the government work. While the influences of this matter was long and deep that civilians now are still talking about it, we can't shy away from admitting that any means taken to attain a worthy goal would definitely harm even in a long run the establishment of personal imagine in other's mind. On the contrary, it may cause a counteraction. So the speaker fails to recognize other people's thinking of someone who took any means to attain his or her own goal is equally important in a society.

What's more, something most of us think it worthy often turns out to be in the other way around some issues after a long time. As we all know that the environment of our Earth is getting worse and worse while in the origin, it is our human beings did the destruction in the light of getting those benefits in current. However in nowadays, more and more problems show up and we finally recognize the errors human did in the past. So there may be something indeed worthy for people's daily lives in recent years that we are to take means to attain it. But neglect the further future may leave a big problem to our generation which would cause their hard working of solving what was left by the formal. And this is definitely selfish.

And also we have to notice that sometimes the goal is too far from us to reach. If we set a goal which is not realistic, we could never make it through any ways thus there is no need for us to do so.

In sum, if we are to reaching our own goals, at the outset we need to give a vital consideration of the meaningfulness of the goals, and judge the worthy of goal in an objective way. Thus we make it though a legal way that won't harm others at least in a least part.

The author asserts that it is justifiable for an individual to implement a goal which a individual regards it is worthy by any means. I find it takes risk to advocate any one to do so, before clarifying how to define the term "worthy".

In my observation, whether the is worthy can hinge on the individual interest, if a man's goal is detrimental to most of others and will even harm the environment, or influence the descendants' need, I will view it as unworthy. While if the goal will contribute to most of the populace and will benefit the development and stability of society and won't do any harm to the future demands of offspring, I will define it as worthy. In addition, when individuals or groups, even organizations take any measures to implement the former, is entirely unjustifiable, even anti-social. However, when we together strive for the latter, it will bring great well-being to our society and our future.

To witness the former in action, one should pay attention to terrorism. The terrors always advocate the Jihad, and risk their life to carry out the so call great battle, while it has brought deep suffering to the general people and has created great upheaval to society, as well as has severely harmed the development of the country. For example, there are almost several persons die from terrorist attack in Iraq, including general publics and soldiers. Another example for the former case is that many countries in the world are destroying their natural resources and environment, in order to impulse the current development of their countries. Large amount of dirty and pernicious waters are discharged in the rivers and lakes, myriads of industrial exhausts are emitted to the sky, uncountable number of earth are destroyed and replaced by skyscrapers. In a word, any means are taken to accelerate the short-term development, we can anticipate the disastrous consequence resulted--acid rain, scarcity of freshwater, even the global warming.

While illustrate the latter, we can focus on the counter-terrorism. Almost most of the worldwide countries are together to fight against it. Many measures have taken to shatter the terrors. For example, the fiscal budgets on counter-terrorism have increased in Russian, American, China, etc. Meanwhile, a large number of soldiers are appointed to protect the safety of people, and many extreme measures are putting into practice in annihilating them, such as arresting, killing. Another example to indicate that any means to attain the latter goal are justifiable is the technology research on medicine and vaccine which will benefit the human begins. For example, many countries have invested considerable money on the research of vaccine and other diseases, such H1N1. Of course, all the means which carried out in the war against drug traffickers is justifiable as well. For example, when a drug smuggle wants to abscond, it is completely justifiable for the police to shoot to him/her.

In sum, whether it is justifiable to take any means to implement a goal, the key determinant is that what is goal will bring to the society and the offspring. If the goal serves most of the current people and won't harm to the descendants, it is reasonable to do so.

开头很好,很简洁

First and foremost, we have to define the word "worthy" before all the scrutiny. If a goal can gain more than its cost, we define it as worthy. However, different people always hold different value systems, which means the gain and cost will not stay the same when the goal is tested by different people. For example, in personal level, spending 2 or 3 days and thousands of dollars to buy a ticket for a concert may not be worthy for most people, in which case some crazy fans of those superstars will believe it is worthy. In national level, the recommendation to decrease the emission of carbon dioxide will be accepted by developed country, while the developing will reject. So "worthy" is so subjective word that we cannot use it as an absolute standard to test a goal.

从个人到公司到国家对worthy的定义

Even if we can build an absolute standard for the goals, the cost of different ways to approach it should be taken into account. As we know, different means to finish the same task will cause various costs, like time, money or reputation. So we have to divide the situation into two parts based on whether the goal can determine the final choice itself.

In a few extreme situations, like in the war, the cost will be ultimate if we cannot attain the goal, which means the cost of different means would not influenced the final choice(
这个例子怎么说明cost of different means would not influenced the final choice,我不是很懂). 战争的例子

The goal is to win the election which is reasonable, while the way is not. Nixon obviously neglected the cost of such mean(ses), which finally lead to his resignation. So even when a goal is worthy or even desirable, the cost of the means to attain it has to be taken into account, especially the cost of the mean is big enough to determine the results.

Watergate事件感觉例子不是很好哦,虽然能说明costgain之间的关系,但是这个例子别人可能会用得很多哦

To sum up, a goal is worthy or not differs from individuals so it is groundless to say use the word “worthy’ as an absolute standard. And even we get the absolute standard to test the gain and loss of a goal, it is not enough to claim any means is justifiable. We have to consider the total(total

I am confused of how to judge whether a goal is worthy. Is it worthy to an individual? Or is it worthy to the public? Is it worthy to a nation? Or is it benefit the whole world? If there is a man think killing his neighbour is worthy to himself for he has been hating the man for 20 years and he feels very bad everyday when he see the man's beautiful life, we can not say it is a worthy goal. Or a man is in search of wealth, is it a worthy goal? So the title-statement
is hard for me to discuss. But, as far as I am concerned, worth is in related with what will be cost to achieve the goal and what can we get from the achievement .

As for the scientists, their goals are always worthy of pursuing, for most of them can be helpful for the humanbeings' development. Marie curie and Pierre Curie are just one of them. They were living so poor a life and even ignored their children when they concentrited themselves in their research. At the same time, their research were damaging their health, they succeed at the cost of so many things. But at least, their results has also bring the whole society a lot, and this goal is worthy of them to achieve by any means, actually, they did like this. As for the artist, Vencent Van gogh, he pursuied his art dream without any hesitation, no matter what his persistence would give him, he never gave up.Then I don not know if it is a tragedy when he killed himself for his art dream, but I think in his heart, nothing can compare his way to attain his art goal, poor,
offence, even death was not able to stop him. So many other people, just like them, are also pursuing their dreams at unbelievable cost, but their goals are noble and valueble, the achievement would bring the society so many benefits.

But there are also some people only want to attain their selfish goals without regarding to others' feeling and benefits. For example, Hiltler killed numorous of people only to get self satisfication, from a certain angle, he achieved his goal, a goal maybe worthy to him, but evil to people all over the world. We can not say the means taken to attain his goal is justifiable. The same is ture on the problem of environment and development. It is not to deny that the advance of the society is a duty on our modern people, however, when it comes to environmental problems, the goal is not as worthy as it stands at the cost of damaging the surroundings. For if we ignore the cost, the nature will no doubt blame us even by means of extinction.
So I personally hold the opinion that a goal, which is noble, valuable, peaceful or at least not hurting others, including the nature would be a goal worthy of any means to achieve, but a precise is the means would not bring misery to our humanbeings, or to others around us.A goal which would be evil to the public or others around us is not a worthy goal, let along attain it.
In sum, what we are pursuing is a brighter future, if we keep the direction in our heart, we will definitely find a way to attain our dreams.

The author asserts that it is justifiable for an individual to implement a goal which a individual regards it is worthy by any means. I find it takes risk to advocate any one to do so, before clarifying how to define the term "worthy".(共鸣)

In my observation, whether the
?什么 is worthy can hinge on the individual interest这个主题句与下文不符,应为这段都没有论证individual interest goalworthy的,按照你的意思,我理解的,至少要说明是individual interest是否有利于大众,感觉这句话没说完) if a man's goal is detrimental to most of others and will even harm the environment, or influence the descendants' need, I will view it as unworthy. (这个例子我感觉没有体现出worthy,应为恐怖主义本来就没什么价值,我建议用这个例子可以说它对某某是worthy的,但伤害了大众利益,与你上面的观点也更契合)Another example for the former case is that many countries in the world are destroying their natural resources and environment, in order to impulse the current development of their countries. Large amount of dirty and pernicious waters are discharged in the rivers and lakes, myriads of industrial exhausts are emitted to the sky, uncountable number of earth are destroyed and replaced by skyscrapers. 感觉文章的思路脉络已经很清晰了,先在第二段提出观点,下文分别论述,也举了一些例子说明观点,衔接适合,我觉得相当不错了,加油

TOPIC: ISSUE212 - "If a goal is worthy, then any means taken to attain it is justifiable."
WORDS: 587          TIME: 00:51:31          DATE: 2010/8/10 17:34:08

As the speaker claims that it is justifiable for any means can be took to attain a worthy goal. Since so hard to determine whether a goal is worthy that the speaker can not conclude easily. There are both positive and negative effects if we want to attain the goal by fair means or foul.

How to understand "worthy"? Who make the judgment? If the welfare of a goal is greater than its opportunity cost, and the cost is suitable, it can be regard as a worthy goal. From the perspective of society, to reach a goal in accordance with some justifiable interests of the majority, sometimes people have no choice but to use bad means. For example, to gain freedom and equality of the majority, the people have to choose war in the revolution, even though such actions mean violation with the laws and conflicts with the interests of the governor. Suppose they obey the laws all the time even when their interests are seriously hurt, or they tend to achieve social revolution through a more smooth way, their goals would never be met, because revolution always means violent conflicts between the governor and the governed, rendering such approaches intrinsically unrealistic.

However, for someone's own sake and benefit, they still take all means to attain the goal they think is worthy, which includes some means that may  damage the interests of others. We should depend on the consequences of the goal realization to determine whether using this means. That is to say,
people should use the way that has benefical to others and themselves, or at least no harm to others. In addition, no matter how many advantages there are to their own, people can't do this if the way may harm others' interest. For instance, business leaders to do intentional harm to their customers or to the society in which they operate—for example, by providing dangerous products and by polluting natural environment for the goal of profit maximization. Also like professors plagiarize other’s paper in the process of study. As a result, we should be alert to the possibility that individuals, organizations or governments tend to plead a worthy goal in excuse of their contemptible means and private interests.

Even if they are basing on a good real intention, we should consider cost-and-benefit side of things in an effort to obtaining an nonbiased, all-around point of view. Due to many people do things without a deep thinking before, they will bring negative influences to achieve goals. The leaders of Soviet Russia want to make the industry of the country more advanced; make its economy more flourishing. But the leaders made a wrong decision to resort to an improper policy which limited the direction of scientists' investigation. As the leaders are not familiar with science, most of their opinions are improper. But the policy enforced the Soviet Russia scientists abort some excellent plans. And in such way, Soviet Russia lost many resources and was transcended by America. Though the wishes of Soviet Russia leaders are good, the means they resorted to is not justifiable and eventually cause a negative effect.

To sum up, I am against the speaker's statement since he ignores a important aspect of how to evaluate goals. If someone has distort valuse about "worthy", they may be functionalists and opportunists. To push our society forward, it is necessary to judge a goal from different perspectives to find whether the true value is beneficial and how to achieve it before excessive devotion.

I am confused of how to judge whether a goal is worthy. 【可以考虑把后面的例子放到前面,先说如果有个目标是怎么样,然后这个目标值得吗有价值吗对。。。更好】Is it worthy to an individual? Or is it worthy to the public? Is it worthy to a nation? Or is it benefit【名词,动词时应该用will it benefit】
the whole world? If there is a man think killing his neighbour is worthy to himself for he has been hating the man for 20 years and he feels very bad everyday when he see【sees the man's beautiful life, we can not say it is a worthy goal. Or a man is in search of wealth, is it a worthy goal? So the title-statement
is hard for me to discuss. But, as far as I am concerned, worth is in related with what will be cost to achieve the goal and what can we get from the achievement .
As for the scientists, their goals are always worthy of pursuing, for most of them can be helpful for the human
beings' development.【用了好多for从开头】 Marie curie and Pierre Curie are just one of them. They were living so poor a life and even ignored their children when they concentrited themselves in their research. At the same time, their research were damaging their health, they succeed at【at?你的意思是他们的成功建立在这么多事情的成本上,换个句型】 the cost of so many things. But at least, their results has also bring the whole society a lot【what, and this goal is worthy of them to achieve by any means, actually, they did like this. As for the artist, Vencent Van gogh, he pursuied his art dream without any hesitation, no matter what his persistence would give him, he never gave up.Then I don not know if 【whetherit is a tragedy when he killed himself for his art dream, but I think in his heart, nothing can compare his way to attain his art goal, poor,
offence, even death was【were
not able to stop him. So many other people, just like them, are also pursuing their dreams at unbelievable cost, but their goals are noble and valueble, the achievement would bring the society so many benefits.
这段例子用一个基本就可以了,你基本主要在讲worthy,但by any means也很重要

文字有点概括,可以再修改修改
So I personally hold the opinion that a goal, which is noble, valuable, peaceful or at least not hurting others, including the nature would be a goal worthy of any means to achieve, but a precise is the means would not bring misery to our humanbeings, or to others around us.A goal which would be evil to the public or others around us is not a worthy goal, let along attain it【让我们一起实现不值得的目标?】.
In sum, what we are pursuing is a brighter future, if we keep the direction in our heart, we will definitely find a way to attain our dreams.

The critical step of achieving success is setting a goal. Individual has personal goals and countries have goals, too. A university has a goal for educating students and a company has a goal, too. Goals are university and can be divided as temporal goals and permanent goals. But, a goal is worthy does not means that any means can be taken to attain it.

Firstly, the worthy of a goal should be judged on a case-by-case basis since in the process of pursuing goals, simultaneously sacrifices should be made. Take the sacrifice of life for example, Madame Curie devoted her life into the radioactive chemical element purifying in the price of her health. Dr. Bethune who came all the way from Canada to China saved numerous of soldiers died of his wound in an operation. Consider the marathon race; candidates are in a high risk of a permanent injury by training enough to be adequate for the event. All of the goals above is gorgeous, but none of the sacrifices can be essay to accept. Thus, when we evaluate the worthy of a goal, both negative and positive sides should be considered to reach the final evaluation. Some goals are splendors, but the sacrifice is huge to undermine its worthiness to obtain.

Secondly, even the goal is worth to obtain, one need reconsider the required abilities to achieve it. Goals which describe a utopia that is beyond one's ability won't worthy to pursue them. Manic fans who are fascinated to marry their favorable stars, ordinary people who want to grow wings to fly into the sky, and mammonists who are dream of waking up as a billionaire are examples of setting goals that is unobtainable. With an appropriate goal, the endless efforts are essential to attain them. If one makes no effort, the goal will vanish as an illusion. Hence, think twice about the feasibility of the goal before you start make effort to it.

Lastly, even the goals are feasible and mean a lot to you, you can not attain it by any means. Crossing the line of mores, ethics and laws is a big mistake for goal-chasers, which means obey the social rules in the process of chasing goals. Consider the goal for earning money; if one trys to obtain it by escaping tax, cheating customs, transact forge goods, one will be punished when others find out. Consider publishing a paper in famous magazines is a promising goal. If an author became known to the world and then was find out to be a plagiarizer, what is waiting for him/her is the forfeit of the obtained honor. Hence, the means used to chase a dream should cross the basic lines in society.

All in all, a lot of effort should be made in the process of pursuing a appropriate goal, for example in the case that some great people sacrifice their life. A appropriate goal should not be something that turn out to be illusion and disobey the social rules should not be considered as one means to achieve goals.
