(09.02.27NA)Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A job with more vacation time but a low salary is better than a job with a high salary but less vacation time.
As is often the case, almost all the employees tend to get a job with a high salary in this pragmatic society, meanwhile, everyone also need to have vacations to relax and family time. It is a contradiction that hardly can we get them simultaneously. Inevitably, I will find myself in the situation where I can decide between a high-paying job with more vacation and a lower-paying job with less vocation time. I would choose the job with the lower salary but greater personal time without hesitation, because my family and friends are the most significant things in my life.

Admittedly, through my diligent study and continued hard work I will be able to find a job will provide my future family and me with financial security. We should be able to afford the basic allowance of life, such as a commodious house, enough food to nourish us and keep us in good health, as well as higher education for our children. A high job salary could subsidize our offspring to have a better life and provide our parents better health-care at old ages. Consequently, nobody can deny the benefits a high salary job could bring about.

Nevertheless, a million dollars in the bank would be nothing if I didn’t have vacations to enjoy these riches with my family and friends. As a threshold matter, time is the greatest investment I can make into the relationship with my wife and my children. A marriage is not just a decision one makes but a promise that one keeps. In order to do so one has to be there for the other person and share moments of joy as well as times of difficulty. Nowadays, too many relationships wither away as the parents are unable to work out their problem or bond through meaningful experience. Personal careers become too important and family time becomes a rear occurrence.

Turn to the children’s aspect, the absence of one parent, due to professional career or divorce, can exert negative effects on a child’s growing up considerably. The child might question his value to father and mother and have a sense of self abased. Without the presence of either or, worse, both parents, the child will be more likely to make bad decisions as his is lacking proper guidance. Also, it is an essential point that is worth mentioning that, neither expensive toys nor fancy clothes can compensate for this.

Lastly, I could obtain more pleasure from spending time with my friends than I ever could from driving a luxury car to go to work. The inner peace and balance that I enjoy from their company are priceless to me.

In sum, given those convincing reasons which were discussed above, I firmly commit to the notion that it is a wise decision to choose the job with more vacation but a low salary.

The reading passage claims that the declination of reading literature is troubling because this trend has negative effects for the reading public, for the culture in general and the future of literature itself. However, this statement is strongly challenged by the lecture which provides drastically different points.

The speaker begins to pointing out that the readings about science, history, political and so forth are also high qualified and creative and well written, which rejects the contents in the reading materials, nothing else provides the intellectual stimulation that literature does. Those readings can also stimulate the imagination of readers.

In addition, the lecture goes on to maintain that the readers not only have less time on literature, but also books in general. Listening to the music, watching the television and appreciating a brilliant movie does not represent a lowered level of culture, because the culture is changing. What’s more, these forms of entertainment are directly accord to contemporary concern. This perspective also conflict what mentioned in the article that these trivial forms of entertainment is low-level culture in general.

Furthermore, the lecture opposes to the writer’s standpoint by emphasizing that the reader less support to the writers today because modern literature is always difficult to understand, no matter the earlier generation or contemporary generation. It must be the author’s own fault. On the contrary, the writer insists that the reading of literature is declining because of the poor standard of today’s readers.

In sum, all the three evidences of the lecture illustrate that the speaker disagrees with the points mentioned in the reading passage.

8.30 特训组作业 TPO12

The reading passage claims that there are good reasons to convince that Jane Austen is the subject of the full-length portrait of a teenager girl. However, this statement is strongly challenged by the lecture which maintains that it is questionable and provides drastically different points.

The speaker begins by pointing out that Austen’s family admitted to use the portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letters about 70 years after her death, it is totally impossible for the painter to depict the real appearance of Austen. It rejects the contents in the reading material that Austen’s family clearly recognized it as a portrait of her.

In addition, the lecture goes on to opine that the teenager girl in the portrait is probably Austen’s relatives, because Austen has a very big family, it is entirely possible that the girl is her cousin or other children who is resemble to Jane Austen. This perspective also conflicts what mentioned in the article that the similarities of the face between the portrait and Cassandra’s sketch indicated that the girl is Austen.

Furthermore, the reading passage held the standpoint that the style of this portrait links to Ozias Humphrey who was active in the period when Jane Austen was a teenage girl. On the contrary, the lecturer provides the evidence that the canvas of the painting was particular ones that only sold later Ozias Humphrey active period. It was sold by a man named William, who sold this kind of canvas after Austen’s teenage.

In sum, all the three evidences of the lecture illustrate that the speaker disagrees with the points mentioned in the reading passage.

Younger school children (aged five to ten) should be required to study art and music in addition to math, language, science and history.

As is often the case, it is much concerned to a point where a wide discussion had been aroused that what will be considered to be the required curriculum for younger school children. And the authorities at schools must make very important decisions regarding this problem. Quite a few citizens hold the standpoint that art and music are of no use for children aged from five to ten, because they are too young to appreciate them. As for me, however, I believe that art and music should be part of this required curriculum.

As a threshold matter, studying art and music makes the children more diverse and thoughtful. When one studies art and music, one is exposed to many different culture and points of view. It allows the audience to perceive the world through a different set of eyes. It is also an excellent way to spark the children’s interest in other cultures and diverse ways of life. This promotes understanding and tolerance of others. By appreciating the opera of middle age of Italy, one could find out that the Christian Church and the language of Latin had considerable influence in Italy at that time. In this sense, one could learn about the confluence of culture in middle age Europe. What’s more, this also relates to their learning of other subjects, such as history, language and so forth.

In addition, these subjects provide the young children an outlet for expressing their emotions and passions. Art and music are an excellent way to express their emotions. For example, children view the Sunflower painted by Vincent Van Gogh, learning about that it is full of passion, because the golden bright tone of the whole picture and the sunflower symbolize hope and happiness. Consequently, they could learn how to express their passion and emotion by their brushes. By enjoying the classical music, children may cultivate their quality of overcoming difficulties with life and dealing with personal issues.

Furthermore, viewing art and listening to the music are excellent way for the young children to relax after one day’s studying. When I am stressed because of life, one of my favorite activities is painting while listening to my preferred music. I find this activity to be very soothing and calming. Looking at works of art can have a similar effect, and when one understands the philosophy behind the work, it is that much more beneficial. Although young school children are too young to experience these benefits of art and music holistically, it is essential to let them spark interest in art and music, which is conducive to their following life.

To sum up, given those benefits of art and music which were discussed above, I firmly commit to the notion that art and music should be part of this required curriculum.
