Younger school children (aged five to ten) should be required to study art and music in addition to math, language, science and history.
As is often the case, it is much concerned to a point where a wide discussion had been aroused that what will be considered to be the required curriculum for younger school children. And the authorities at schools must make very important decisions regarding this problem. Quite a few citizens hold the standpoint that art and music are of no use for children aged from five to ten, because they are too young to appreciate them. As for me, however, I believe that art and music should be part of this required curriculum.
As a threshold matter, studying art and music makes the children more diverse and thoughtful. When one studies art and music, one is exposed to many different culture and points of view. It allows the audience to perceive the world through a different set of eyes. It is also an excellent way to spark the children’s interest in other cultures and diverse ways of life. This promotes understanding and tolerance of others. By appreciating the opera of middle age of Italy, one could find out that the Christian Church and the language of Latin had considerable influence in Italy at that time. In this sense, one could learn about the confluence of culture in middle age Europe. What’s more, this also relates to their learning of other subjects, such as history, language and so forth.
In addition, these subjects provide the young children an outlet for expressing their emotions and passions. Art and music are an excellent way to express their emotions. For example, children view the Sunflower painted by Vincent Van Gogh, learning about that it is full of passion, because the golden bright tone of the whole picture and the sunflower symbolize hope and happiness. Consequently, they could learn how to express their passion and emotion by their brushes. By enjoying the classical music, children may cultivate their quality of overcoming difficulties with life and dealing with personal issues.
Furthermore, viewing art and listening to the music are excellent way for the young children to relax after one day’s studying. When I am stressed because of life, one of my favorite activities is painting while listening to my preferred music. I find this activity to be very soothing and calming. Looking at works of art can have a similar effect, and when one understands the philosophy behind the work, it is that much more beneficial. Although young school children are too young to experience these benefits of art and music holistically, it is essential to let them spark interest in art and music, which is conducive to their following life.
To sum up, given those benefits of art and music which were discussed above, I firmly commit to the notion that art and music should be part of this required curriculum. |
