Admittedly, in some situation, we feel thatthere is no choice left for us. But I fundamentally agree on the statement thatthe absence of choice is a circumstance that is very rare. A democratic societymust ensures that people's rights to have choices will not be deprived of,though it have to be limited sometimes. Actually, people who claim that theycan not choose are just not satisfied.
It is people's subjective matter to makechoices, which depends on their needs, desires and ambitions. We make choicesall the time on a variety of fairs, which can be important such as our careers,or as simple as the color of hair. Personally, like Bill Gates, who choose toleave the Harvard and step into his favorite field of software, people makechoices to satisfy their demands and gain a promising future. For the society, people can also make choices to decide the trends. For instance, people canvote to choose the president or hold a demonstration to boycott someunreasonable policy.
However, the examples that people can notchoose also can be found. In the feudal society, people are always forced to dosomething because all the society is ruled by the monarchy. The ruling classdeprived people of the rights to choose. Another thing that we can not makechoice on is the laws of the nature. At least, people have to accept that theywill die finally and all the lives on earth have the same end.
Nevertheless, the exceptions describedabove are really the minority. And even in the feudal society, people finallychose to rebel against the governing class and protect their rights. What'smore, we can not avoid death. But what we can choose is our attitude to thepredestined end as well as the life we have. Holding a positive mind of life,we may find the death is not that hard to accept.
Now that we have choices of almost anymatter, why are there still so many people complaining that the absence ofchoice? The most possible reason is that they always want the best and focus onone option stubbornly. For instance, most of Chinese students work so hard, even at the price of their innovation and health, that they can get offers fromseveral key universities because they hold the prejudice that only by enteringthese universities can they harvest a bright future. Besides, many people whoare trapped by financial problems claim that they have no choice but toannounce bankruptcy, take a demeaning job or fall into the guilty of fraud. Thecrucial reason is that they refuse to consider those options that are notattractive even in such straitened situations. They only choose to acceptfinancial security instead of giving up the security because of their fears forthe unpleasant results.
