186. "Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world."

As is well known, it is a realistic but not visionary world where people live in. Particularly in modern times, with the rapidly development of society, pragmatism are attached far more importance to than any age before. However, I am not quite in favor of the view of the statement that all powers and talents must serve for practicality. In my submission, both idealism and pragmatism are of great significance to our society so that people should never be partial to only focus on one side.

First of all, I must emphasize the importance of pragmatism. Pragmatism, which lays its emphasis on results and effects, plays a very vital role in determining people's life standard and social development. It requires people to take effective measures to accomplish concrete achievement that can benefit to themselves and society rather than just provide presumptions to realistic problems but without final available solution. Consequently, pragmatism can increase the number of tangible achievement which in other words increases the productivity thus boosts the economy and development. Besides, to be pragmatic, people and groups must have the spirit of science that can help them make comprehensive and accurate analysis on things. To illustrate this point, there is an example that is very persuasive: to better solve a problem on production line, engineers have to look up numerous references and make trials and group discussions to finally decide the solution. This will inevitably deepen their understanding of the specific technique and sometimes even the successful method can contribute to the whole manufacture field, which promotes the society. Hence, it will be beneficial to society for powers and talents to be pragmatism.

In the second place, although pragmatism is very meaningful to our society, it does not mean that things without practicality are absolutely useless. In fact, in some conditions these seeming unuseful things are exactly great treasures for our human beings. For example, literature, which seems to just use language method for recording history or expressing personal opinions, is universally regarded as an extraordinarily vital part of human world. Thought it does not directly provide any concrete products except for some press work to the society, it presents the spiritual world of human and the profound thoughts that can influence our society deeply. The lasting value of an excellent literal work is far more than a practical invention in human history, as Homer Epic can be mentioned by ordinary people for more than two thousand year but no other inventions can affect that long time. Additionally, art, and some basic science as mathematics, are similarly as literature to have lasting value. Art is a tool to convey people's aesthetic perception, which will bring comfort and resonance in heart to people. And basic science is always the foundation of the pragmatic technology that without it other advanced fields cannot develop well. Hence, another equally importance is powers and talents should not neglect ths significance of things not pragmatism.

Admittedly, in some conditions it is true that practicality is far more important such as the management of company. Nonetheless, this alone does not provide a sufficient support to the view of statement. When the advantage and disadvantage of my view and adversary point are carefully compared, the most striking one is obvious.

In sum, practicality should not be the only thing that our society focuses on. To make a balanced world, we should develop both sides of practicality and idealism.
