TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The discussion above involves two aspects. For one thing, scholars and researchers' contribution to the society. For another, their interests are important for them to pursue. As the speaker claims, no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem, individual interests play an important role in researching. I strongly agree with the speaker's such opinion. However, another opinion speaker holds is different from my view, which concerns more about society. The speaker advices scholars and researchers show little concern about their work's contribution to society, just focus on their interests. In this realm, I hold the opposite opinion against the speaker's, for following reasons.
To begin with, it is universally acknowledged that interest is the best teacher, which support the part of speaker's opinion. Without a strong desire to devote to a certain field, no any achievement can be led to. Only if a person is doing what he really interest can his spirit be encouraged. For instance, a well-known mathematician called Gauss, when he was only a child, he had shown a great interest in math. He rapidly came out the result of a question that plus number from one to hundrend. After that, when he grew up, many more theories about math has been given by Gauss. Assuming that he wasn't pursue his further upon his interests, would he can achieve so many accomplishments as we know today? If he was forced to do research in literature, he might never known to generations. For that matter, it is clearly that people's interest is a most important factor which will lead to success in any field.
Additionally, it seems that any research or project will not predict its influence to society. As we know, computer is orginally invented for military use, along with Internet. At that time, inventors has never predicted this type of machine plays a significant role in our daily life now. Nowadays, any realm of fields cannot go on working efficiently without computers and Internet. From this view to consider the issue, it is not necessary or even impossibile to concern contribution researchers make to society.
Admittedly, much attention to society should not be payed by researchers. However, it is not to say that any influence these scientists make on society should be ignored. Clone of human is one of example, as we know, such behavior influences society so much, including morality and worldwide comments. If scientists in such field overlook any of these and insist on their research, disaster may occur after years. For cloned human may have their own method of thinking and behaviors, they may violate regulations of our human or even take place of us. So important it is for scientists to take influence to society into consideration when taking actions in this field. Obviously, from the example above, we can see it is not wise to ignore any comments from society when doing research.
To sum up, I personally think that it is because of researchers interests' that lead to scientists devote themselves into various kinds of scientific fields, which actually contrubute to the development of our society virtually. It is said that scientific achievement drives the development of our society. Any accomplishment in science will have influence on society in return. Given this fact, scholars and researchers should not ignore their responsibilities to the society.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT25 - The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell.
"Two years ago, the town of Ocean View built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. During the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. The best way to improve Hopewell's economy, and generate additional tax revenues, is to build a golf course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View."

The mayor of Hopewell claims that it is better for Hopewell to build a golf course and resort hotel. Such behavior will improve the economy of Hopewell and more tax revenues can be get by doing so. For basic reason contribute to it is the comparison with Ocean View, which built a golf course and resort hotel two years ago. Ocean View's economy has improved a lot after that. Seemingly, it is reasonable for Hopewell, but close scrutiny will reveal the same consequence will not occur at Hopewell.
At beginning, the comparison between these two different areas is meaningless. Many other factors are different in these two towns, such as climate, traffic, population and so on. It is likely that Ocean View's climate is quite pleasant, while Hopewell is very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Besides, it is convenient for people to access to Ocean View, at the same time, Hopewell has no express way, not so many tourists can get there. Without ruling out any other factor which may influence the comparison between these two towns, the author cannot convince us the fact that the same effect will have on Hopewell as Ocean View does.
In addition, no evidence is provided to support that the improve of economy in Hopewell is result of golf course and resort hotel. Perhaps former years, the economy is not well around all nation, including Hopewell. Two years' crisis of economy passed, it will naturally lead to a flourish of economy in nation, which will actually contribute to the increase of economy in Ocean View. If the author can't provide sufficient evidence to illustrate that no other factors may result in the same result, it is unconvincing for us to believe the assumption.
Finally, it is hard to say that such action is the best way to improve Hopewell's economy. Any measure should adapt to local situation. It is possibile that Ocean View is near the sea, so it is clearly tourism is one of best industry in this area. However, if Hopewell has not such condition, the same industry will not make the same result. For example, it Hopewell is near mountain or place where full of mineral. It is better for Hopewell to develop its heavy industry, such as exploring coal. So, it is too hasty for the author to make such conclusion that Hopewell should do the same as Ocean View does.
To sum up, the argument is not well presented as it stands. To better bolster it, the author must make a objective comparison between two towns. Any possibile factors should be taken into consideration when comparing. Of course, further information about Hopewell should be given to show us the potent it has to its economy increase.
