Regarding the role that government plays in the funding of arts, the debate never fade and the author presents a point that I simply can not agree. Funding from the government, although could somehow limit the arts, still valuable and indispensable. Instead other organizations should also be considered as the fund raisers.
True, for government that is so different from other orgnizations, that possesses the almighty powers and its certain political views, dominant and ruling, for governing the country, and that has various reponsiblities for sustaining the wealfare for its people, may somehow ignore, unintentionally or deliberately, maintaining the integerity of arts, but, as long as the government does not set too many controls or a criteria for arts, the integerity could be saved by supporting from other organizations. Of course, only the arts that is favorable and beneficial for government can be funded by it. The art that is so bold, such as the rock music, is neglected definitely. However, as I mentioned above, the main obligation of the government is not funding. Arts, that is more like an independent or individual’s preference, that is more like a club in which people who have same inclination gather, should be supported mainly by nongovernmental organizations or some responsible citizens. So, as long as no serious restriction set, funding from the government is not threatening at least.
Government’s power can be beneficial for arts too. Some arts, especially those who are so new and experimental that need money to start, or those who are so traditional, valuable but almost neglected by the public that need money to restore, can be saved by the almighty power and resources of the government. Moreover, the responsibilities to accept, embrace, and support the advancements of society and to rebulid the traditional culture, record the history also belong to the government. Because, arts contains so many hidden emotions, opinions that relate to the value of one individual citizen or a community in the society in a certain time, and which is a precious clue or hint for government to identify the value of its citizens, for historians to understand the culture. Lost arts will be a discrepency that never be retrieve, which is truly tragedy and be the blotch that represented a failure of a government. In fact, due to the government’s almighty position, other organizations will more likely to follow its move and donate resources in the arts and through all kinds of media, more and more people will notice the fundings and get aquiantance to those arts. if those immature arts aggrandized by the fund, more new ideas and products will be created and therefore it is promoted. in order to keep the integerity of arts, government funding is indispensable.
To summarize, government funding can offer some arts a great opportunity for further advancements, can protect some arts from disappearing. As long as, there is no harsh restrictions for arts, the integerity will not be threatened. |
