96"Although, critics who write about the arts tend to deny the existence of any objective standards for evaluating works of art, they have a responsibility to establish standards by which works of art can be judged."
When reading newspaper, you may find some evaluation from critics about a film, a picture and so on. Some people, like me, think nothing of those criticize(该处应用名词), for there are often inaccuracy in what critics write. Thus the speaker proposes that critics should establish a standards for evaluating the works of art, which I disagree. It is impossible for the quality of the standards demanding(这句话费解。 And It is as well unnecessary since there already exists one—whether the mass accept the artpiece or not. (84) (我觉得这个标准如果改说the taste of the grass-root people可能更明白些。)
Rules are rigid(什么rules最好说明一下), while art can be expressed by a variety of ways. Following these standards probably close(少s) doors to the original form or content of art, as well as regard a conventional one a model of classical art, for the establishment of new standards is sure to after(after不能做动词啊) careful study of the past evaluation. And the latest art form or art content may be excluded(如果你认为设立了一个标准,就使得后来者难以有创新,那latest一词就不太妥当,因为已经暗示了“新”的意思了). If one evaluate(少s) the literary works of clear structure and a description according to time, he/she can hardly think “Wuthering Heights” a charming novel, for the simple reason that instead of describing from past to present , the author took a form of narration from present to the past.(114)
Critics in different time have various opinions about the same piece of art. The rules set up today probably need adjusting, and even reestablishing(应该再来个时间名词,跟today表示对比啊). The instability of the standards makes them useless. Take “Wuthering Heights” for example. When this novel came about, it received no understanding from contemporary critics, even the author’s sister, another famous writer, feel(少s) sorry for this work. However, several years later, this novel became one of the best novels in literary history. William Somerset Maugham, a well-known critic sung highly for this work. If the former critics set up the standards, the latter break it, what meaning do they exist?(104)
In addition, critics living in the same period still show different views about the same works of art, which means the standards they establish is possibly a compromise considering all the ideas. While some emphasize the careful structure of a picture, others may find its rigidity. Although this problem can be easily solved by agreeing(用agreement好了) on what the majority hold, we should not neglect the fact that “Truths are always held by the minority”. And what happens if critics on both sides are one of six and half of a dozen? Too narrow a standard means rigidity, critics following that rule may think wrongly of the works, and even give the opposite evaluation of what it really deserves. Too broad a rule means ambiguity, and loses its function to judge: such as “the masterpiece should be beautiful”, it does nothing to the judgement(拼错拉。没有e) but only a nonsense.(147)
However, when the mass take the responsibility to choose their favorite, it is another case. Admittedly, not all of them have enough knowledge about art, but most of them have the value of beauty(taste of beauty比较好). In some sense, they are critics each(应说everyone of them is a critic), for they have their own opinions and judgement of the works of art. And they willingly to preserve and spread what they appreciate, and discard what they dislike. In summary, if the artpiece reserved and widely-spread, it is a classical one; if it is discarded or even prohibited for justifying reasons, it is a failure.(96,all547)
