21"Reform is seldom brought about by people who are concerned with their own reputation and social standing. Those who are really in earnest about reforming a government, an educational system, or any other institution must be willing to be viewed with disdain by the rest of the world."

21"Reform is seldom brought about by people who are concerned with their own reputation and social standing. Those who are really in earnest about reforming a government, an educational system, or any other institution must be willing to be viewed with disdain by the rest of the world."
Position:Everybody cares about his or her own reputation and social standing and would not be willing to receive the contempt from the rest of life. But those who are enthusiastic about reforming are definitely willing to sacrifice their reputation and social standing to exchange for greater good which can be brought about by the reform.
1)If they are allowed to choose ,those reformists definitely want to conduct a reform successfully with an intact reputation and social standing.
2)But they know, the path to reform is not always smooth, and sometimes, they have to give up their good fame and social status to ensure the reform can more forward.
3)they know on the path of reform, the detriment to their repute is contemporary. Finally, the people will recognize their great contributions and then vindicate and restore their good reputation and social standing they deserve.
4)What if they fail?they would have no regrets, because they know reform is not always as easy as they expect and they are willing to take any bad consequences.
总结:we can not broadly assert that the reformists are not concerned with their own reputation and social standing. But they care more about the success of reform which can make them famous in the end,If they fail, they would have no regrets. In some way, their final goal is to get a greater reputation and social standing in history and to let everybody to memorize them.

heterodoxy

Martin Luther King
