The table illustrates the proportion of consumer expenditure of three different items in 2002, in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden and Turkey.
According to the figures, it is clear that the proportion of expenditure of food, drinks and tobacco was the highest in all the five countries, compared with other items. Turkey got a proportion of food, drinks and tobacco expenditure of 32.14%, almost twice as much as that in Italy. After Turkey, Ireland also had a high expenditure percentage of 28.91% in these items. Besides, the other three countries, Italy, Spain and Sweden got the similar percentage of food, drinks and tobacco (16.36%, 18.80% and 15.77% respectively).
However, in clothing and footwear spending, Italy had the highest point among the five countries, with a proportion of 9.00%, and Sweden got the lowest percentage of 5.40%. Ireland, Spain and Turkey ended up with percentages of 6.43%, 6.51% and 6.63% respectively.
Regarding the leisure and education expenditure, situation changed while Turkey got 4.35% of consumer spending on these items, Spain only had a percentage of 1.98%. In addition, the proportions of leisure and education in Ireland, Italy and Sweden are all under 3.30%, with 2.21%, 3.20% and 3.22% respectively.
