In this memo, the arguer provides ambiguous evidence and weak reasoning, so he failed to convince us that it is necessary to cultivate Latin teachers in their college.

First of all, in the process of showing Latin is helpful for high school students to enroll in college, the arguer makes several flaws. 80 percent graduates who study Latin are admitted to college doesn’t make the conclusion that those students are excellent. Because we even don’t know the figure about students who don’t master Latin. Maybe it is higher than 80 percent, thus students with Latin study lose their advantages in enrollment. What’s more, how many high schools are there in Omni State? How many percentage 7 schools take up? If it is high, the dean should think twice before he makes the final decision.

Secondly, as to the recent study that students learning Latin perform better in logic and critical thinking, the arguer lack detailed table and statistics. So it is hard for us to believe that they are really different after learning Latin and their excellence is relevant to Latin study experience. Besides, except for logical and critical thinking, what about other aspects are they performing. If they do abosolutely bad in communication, writing, calculating, they are always faced with lots of difficulties in college applicant.

Thirdly, whether to open Latin teaching course need to consider many other questions except for students. How many teachers this State really in the future? Have other universities begun to cultivate Latin teachers? Will these teachers be faced with poor employment and salary situations when they graduate? How many students are interested in becoming a Latin teacher? What courses are going to be taught to cultivate good Latin teacher? All these questions are not solved, so we are not sure whether this idea can meet their beginning exception.

In conclusion, the arguer should provide us with more statistics and experiment to convince us. Also it is better to think problems more entirely and critically.

Argument-64The following appeared in a memo from the Dean of the College of Education at Omni State University.

"Only seven of our state's high schools offer even one course in Latin, but over 80 percent of the graduates who study Latin at those seven schools enroll in college. Furthermore, a recent study shows that students who have mastered Latin perform much better in logic and critical thinking. Thus, in order to increase the percentage of our high school students who graduate from college as well as to ensure that they receive a better education in critical thinking, Omni State University should begin an intensive program to prepare our future teachers to teach high school Latin."

In this memo, the arguer provides ambiguous evidence and weak reasoning, so he failed to convince us that it is necessary to cultivate Latin teachers in their college. [很简洁的开头,不错,我个人倒是习惯多加一句To support it, the author...]

Because we even don’t know the figure about students who don’t master Latin. Maybe it(指什么?) is higher than 80 percent,[这句说的不是很清楚] thus students with Latin study lose their advantages in enrollment. What’s more, how many high schools are there in Omni State? How many percentage 7 schools take up? If it is high, the dean should think twice before he makes the final decision.
