The table illustrates the information aboutthe opening date, the scale and the popularity of the underground systems in six largecities, namely London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and LA.
Obviously London boasts not only the oldestsubway system (opened in 1863) but also the biggest one, consisting 394kilometers of route in total, followed by Paris which opened its underground railway 37 yearsafter London did and has 199 kilometers of route. But as many as 1191 millionpassengers are transported by Paris' system per year, much more than the 775 million for its counterpart across the strait.
However, Tokyo’s underground’s popularityis way ahead of them both. A total number of 1927 million travellers, nearlythe sum of London plus Paris, make it the busiest underground system among allthe six cities, despite its relatively medium age (opened in 1927) and length (155km).
It is also noticeable that the pattern ‘the younger, the busier’ is not always working, for all the three recently-built systems (Washington DCin 1976, Kyoto in 1981 and LA in 2001) have both shorter routes (126km, 11kmand 28km respectively) and fewer passengers (144 million, 45 million and 50 million).
