TOPIC: ISSUE240 - "Although it is easy to respond positively to the work of another person or group, it is far more worthwhile to give negative feedback."
WORDS: 667          TIME: 00:24:08          DATE: 2010/11/14 17:51:26

After people or groups finish their projects, they would like to get feedback from their audiences, who help them better in the future. There are two kinds of feedbacks: positive feedback and negative feedback. Positive feedback gives the groups their strengths and encourage them to do better in the future, while negative feedback tends to pull out the groups' shortcoming so that they can come up with ideas to deal with their issues. While positive feedbacks usually sound better and negative feedbacks sounds bitter, it is more beneficial for groups or people to listen to negative feedbacks.

Positive feedbacks are easy to give by audience since people can find the advantages of a group or a person's work pretty easily. The meaning of positive feedback is to laud people or groups that finish the work so that they feel that what they have done is valuable and worthwhile. Such feedback is what people expect to hear after their hard work and it is polite to give people positive feedback after they finish presenting their project to us audiences. In addition, positive feedback can act as catalysts that encourage people or groups to keep working the same way. As positive feedbacks are given out, they know what their strong points are and most of time they will keep doing the same job in later work, and hence they can do better and better.

However, negative feedbacks are not useless at all to groups and in fact these groups would like to listen to sincere negative feedbacks. Since nobody is perfect, weak points in projects always exist and for people who did the project, it is possible that they cannot see those flaws since they may think that what they have done is a perfect masterpiece. Nevertheless, it is necessary for responsible audiences to point out places that the group or people can put more effort on. Although at first place such an endeavor seems discouraging to the groups or people and they may feel hard to accept the fact that people find weaknesses in their project, after a while when they look back at their project they may find out that what people told them to improve actually helps them more than positive feedbacks, which is basically consisted of laudatory words.

One acceptible way for audience to help people or groups who did the project without harming their self-esteem at all is to point out both positive feedbacks and negative feedbacks simultaneously. Audience can begin their comments by first pointing out what the person or a group has done a really good job at specifically to let them know that you are listening carefully to the project. The harder part comes later, when audience begins saying the weaknesses of the work and giving negative feedbacks. The way to say what the problem is should not be as direct as the way to give commends; for example, people are more willing to hear that "this is good, but doing it in another way can be better" than "you should not do this project in this way". A better way of giving out the information you want without being explicit can help people who do hard work without hurting them and in fact they will feel grateful of your precious feedback. To sum up, the way of giving negative feedback is crucial as well in order not to hurt people.

Consequently, both positive feedback and negative feedback play a role in helping people or groups behave better in the future. However, to some extent, negative feedbacks can help them better since negative feedbacks speak out specifically what kind of weaknesses they have. In addition, the way to give suggestion is also important since it can hugely affect the effect of your suggestion. Hence, to help a group or a person, we as audience should give both positive and negative suggestions and meanwhile pay attention to the words we use so that we do not harm people and can assist them.
