Francis A. Kwansa, Ph.D
Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies
email: kwansa@UDel.Edu
Donna Laws, Assistant to the Chair
Email: dlaws@udel.edu
Francis Kwansa ( Associate Chair and Director of Graduate Studies):
The Departmentof Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management offers a program leading toa Master of Science in Hospitality Information Management.
The goal of the program is to developstudents for successful careers as corporate hospitality information managers, consultants, hospitality technology systems implementation professionals, andhospitality managers skilled in applying technology solutions in operationalsettings.
This is a 2 year36-credit program that combines business management courses with informationtechnology courses.
Tuitionscholarships are available for qualified applicants.
Jia Li (China):I have enjoyed my time in Newark, DE so far and the small group of students makes the whole experience even better. We can always talk to the professors in class to add in our opinions and thoughts. The HRIM program will be beneficial in the long run for my life, although I am still in the process of exploring new things and experiencing life. Newark is an absolute college town, where embraced with diversity in such a level that I don't even feel strange at all. You can easily order your favorite Chinese food within a reasonable price or taste Japanese sushi at Trabant Student Center. The town's transportation system is disappointing if you don't have a car. Buses only run on certain schedule and the train won't be available during weekends. Small town will always be boring in the winter, but you can go to Philly, NYC, or Washington DC to have fun.
Yichen Lu, Class of 2012, HIM (China):
As a second-year grad student at UD, I transferred to HRIM this fall and It can be one of the greatest decisions I've ever made.
UD has a great location. 40-minute drive from Philly, 2.5-hour drive from New York and Washington D.C. I mean it's pretty good studying on a campus located in a quiet town and you can get easy access to all the excitement you want from a metropolitan when you need a weekend off.
I'm really enjoying my life here.

Newark, Delaware is acompelling and charming place and I really enjoy living here. Here, we have a bigshopping mall named Christiana Mall, which offers various kinds of stores, including Macy’s, Coach, Apple, AF, Sephora, American Eagle, Banana Republic, SteveMadden, Forever 21, Lucky Brand Jeans and other famous brands you might oftensee on TV or fashion magazines. And the most exciting thing is that Delaware isa tax-free state, which means you only need to pay exactly what you see on thetag! That’s really something other states couldn’t compete with. Additionally,it will take you 5-8 minutes to get there if you drive from campus.
There have beenconsiderable diversity in the style of restaurants in Newark.
That’s the second biggest reason I lovehere. You can easily find some nice and affordable places, such as Mexicanfood, Korean BBQ, and Chinese buffet, which are all in town.
On Main Street, there are all kinds ofdining places for students who always want to try something different. There isone ice cream shop called Cold Stone, which is my favorite place for hangingout with friends, and believe me, the ice creams there are incredible. And theprice is affordable too.
In addition, Newark is agreat location. Philadelphia and Baltimore are very close. DC and NYC are 2 hoursaway. The Rehoboth Beach is less that 1 hour.

Our program does really care our career andfuture. Graduate students are sponsored by department to attend big industryevent like Hotel show and a wide range of academic conferences, which providesus quite many opportunities to get touch with academic circle and industryprofessionals. Actually, my internship and current employment opportunity wereattributed to my department. At that time, our graduate advisor took us toTexas for HITEC conference and I met lots of industry professionals, includingmy General Manager who provided me internship and permanent job. In short, itis without a doubt that I would not be what I am without such many dedicatedprofessors in UD.
Ekaterina Berezina (Graduated, doing PHD now in the US. Russia):
University of Delawareis a wonderful place for conducting research. It provides opportunities tograduate students to learn about research methods and data analysis techniques. Faculty members have different expertise areas and they are more thanwilling to work with graduate students. Since the time when I came herein 2008 I have been involved in several projects and have had a chance topresent my work on academic and industrial conferences. I am sure thatknowledge and experience that I am getting here, at UD, will provide a strongfoundation for my future doctoral study. |
