TOPIC: ARGUMENT97 - The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.

"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."

In this memo, the speaker claims that KICK should add more sports coverage as the television station WACK did before to gain a larger audience share, which of course can increase the profits. The speaker cites a nationwide survey, showing men's interests in sports programs, and WACK's successful experience of increasing sports broadcasts to prove the statement. However, on several grounds below, the conclusion gets little credible support from the so-called evidence.

First of all, about the survey, I have some wonders. How did this survey come into being? Is it authoritative enough to represent the men all around the nation? Even if it is authoritative, how can this nationwide survey reflect the local condition? Perhaps most men through the whole nation like sports programs except this place. Or perhaps only the major cities take part in the investigation but the KICK’s area is suburban.

Secondly, television station WACK's success in doubling the share of the television audience can't be copied by KICK since the difference between two areas. WACK’s success may be based on the condition that the number of men is much more than women in that place. Perhaps the women there love to watch sports programs as well as men. These may not happen in the area of KICK. In addition, we don’t know if there is some another measure taken by WACK at the same time when increasing programs of sports. If so, the success may be brought by this measure.

Thirdly, even if the survey reflects the true condition of the local place and KICK’s area has the same condition as WACK’s so that KICK can get a larger audience share in this way, the speaker provide no evidence stating that they can increase profits by doing this. And this behavior may compress other programs’ time, losing a number of other audiences, or reducing the time of advertisement, which could lower the profit on another hand. What’s worse, if no advertizing company have interests in the programs of sports, the profits would be much lower as well.

As I state above, the speaker blindly suggesting imitating the behavior of WACK to increase profits is ungrounded. To strength the assertion, the speaker should give more details of the survey and the condition of the area of KICK. Also the speaker should make sure that the loss when increasing sports programs can be made up.(word 398)

In this memo, the speaker claims that KICK should add more sports coverage as the television station WACK did before(这两个词删掉也可以吧) to gain a larger audience share, which of course这个词有点绝对,作者并没讲,感觉最好不要用 can increase the profits. The speaker cites a nationwide survey, showing men's interests in sports programs, and WACK's successful experience of increasing sports broadcasts to prove the statement. However, on several grounds below, the conclusion gets little credible support from the so-called evidence.

行文越来越成熟,不错。
但是,好像没有论证利润不一定会增加这一条,感觉忽略了重点。
