I think probably for those who will take the test in one or two months, they could follow what you suggested in No.8; in addition, as you said in No.12, they might consider the essay very carefully after finish the first draft. The quality is much more important than quantity, apparently. All improvement would be done at this stage. Revising the essay again, and again, and then ask others to revise or give suggestions. Of course, the preferred person is native speaker who should study in humanities or social sciences. However, I think this perhaps is very diffucult for most of students in China, so the alternative way might be select one or two essays sending them to their English teachers to revise. I think without such kind of persons, it is not realistic for us to improve profoundly, if we just ask our Chinese friends who are not either majoy in English or have no very good English skill. However, I think in this BBS, people might have good opportunities to ask someone to revise their essays.
For those who will take the test in more than three months, they can try to write the essay as long as the can with the precondition of scrutinize every sentens and words. More importantly, the best way, in my personal opinion, is reading others articles. However, those should not be the essays other Gters wrote, instead, they might be articles written by analysis in the www.bbc.co.uk, www.cnn.com, or somewhere else, from which we can insight both in language level and the thinking method. I think this way perhaps could let us be aligned with the western people in thinking and writing. When we know how to express in English rather than Chnglish, and how to use some advanced vocabulary, we will have a dramatic progress. Furthermore, as the time is quite near the date of test, one month, for instance, they can try to limit their time when writing. And the same thing follows afterwards. (first para.)
All in all, the improvement of writing skill is the accumulation of both time and energy. Or, do you have any suggestions on this matter? Perhaps what I said is not as realistic as I thought, as when I took the GRE, there was no writing. And I never know how to write at that moment, perhaps even at this stage. :) |
