By citing the studies that the professors in Bronston College are happier living in small towns if there spouses have jobs in the same geographic area, the author tries to conclude that Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member it hires in order to attract the gifted teachers, and that the money spent will become a good investment. However, the argument suffers from several logical faults and thus is not convincing.
First of all, the condition of professors' happier living in the small town where the university locates, and the assumption that the professors are more likely to accept the offers from the university is not a correlation of causal and effect. Whether the professors like to work in the university has different and complex reasons, not just the happier feelings of living not far from the university,(改为和伴侣在一个地方工作,因为在一个地方工作不一定在一个地方住,在一个地方住也不一定离学校近) which may include but not limit to the reputation, culture, academic atmosphere of the university. Thus, the condition of happier life living in the small town is perhaps a minor reason for the professor to consider.
Secondly, if we take a close look at the evidence in Bronston College, we can find that the situation of Bronston College, (没有证据说试验的对象是来自B校)that male and female professors are happier living in the town where their spouses also live, may not be necessarily the case for the situation of Pierce University. Though, from the argument, Pierce University is also a small town just like the town where Bronston College is located, other factors also contribute to the overall feelings of the professors. It is possible that local living condition has something to do with the overall feelings too, such as the prices of goods and commodities, the expenditure for children's education and so forth. Hence, the mere fact that the couples live together is not necessarily the reason why professors feel happier and like to work in Bronston College. Thus, Pierce University may not just copy what the Bronston College does, but more detailed studies should be done.
Thirdly, the measure to offer employment to the spouses of each new faculty member Pierce University hires may not be a good investment for attracting most gifted teachers and researchers. It may be hard to do so, because there may be not enough budgets for Pierce University to offer jobs to them, and it may be quite a burden for the university to afford. Additionally, this measure may have potential controversial issue when professors stop the employment with the university, since the university needs to make a decision whether they should dismiss these professors' mates as well, which is definitely too tough to deal with.
Consequently, because of the unwarranted relationship between happier feelings of living and the willingness to accept the offer, the lack of comprehensive comparison between the situation for Pierce University and that for Bronston College, and the problems for hiring all the new faculty members' spouses, the argument is not justifiable. Very close investigation should be conducted so as to enroll more talent professors and researchers and thus improve the morale of entire staff.
还有一点我觉得也很重要:P校不一定能吸引到最有天赋的老师,这项措施也不一定能提高士气。 |
