TOPIC: ARGUMENT197 - The following appeared as part of a recommendation made by a faculty member to the president of a large university.

"Never once in our 150-year history as a university have we clarified our objectives. How, then, can we hope to adapt as an institution to the new challenges facing higher education. As a first step in this evolutionary process, therefore, we should send out questionnaires asking faculty members why they teach, asking students what they want from this university, and asking former students what they gained from their own education here. When the replies come in, we can tabulate them and formulate an official statement of our educational mission. This will surely result in improved programs at our university."

In this argument, the author makes a conclusion that they should send out questionnaires and formulate an official statement of their educational mission in order to improve the education program. At first glance, this argument seems conclusive, however, further demonstration discloses that it neglect some significant concerns which should be considered in this argument.

The author wants to form a education mission by way of dispatching the students and faculties in this university some questionnaires. In my opinion, however, this method cannot bring anticipative result. Firstly, the investigative scale is limited in this university and it is so small that the result of this survey may have unreal results. The education is a huge and complex system, so if they want to get satisfying result, it is advisable to make the investigative scale large enough to make the survey credible. Secondly, people being investigated and the questioned being asked are unbalanced for the reason that the university should not only have an idea of what the students wants but know that what employees, even the society wants. If the author merely considers the one-side, the results will like this: the graduates cannot fit for the jobs which are relevant to their majors and it is hard for them to survive in the society. Last but not the least, only depending on the tabulation of the replies cannot easily form the education mission. They should make meticulous analysis on these replies, and then they may attain some outcomes. In short, whether this survey can make a valuable result needs further discussion.

Even if this investigation is convictive and they can summarize their educational mission, it may not surely result in improved programs. It is a long way between the target and the achievement and the university must do large numbers of works to achieve the target. Without the practice and achievement of their education mission, there is no improvement of education at their university. So the author makes an opinionated assertion that the program will surely improve if they get the official statement of educational mission.

At the start of this argument, the author advises that they should clarify their objectives, however, at the end of this argument, his aim is to formulate the official statement and improve the program. It is known that the educational objective is one of the university's targets including the targets of scientific research and so on. If they want to clarify the objectives, the author should consider it comprehensively and make other helpful suggestions.

In the final analysis, the conclusion made by the author fails to substantiate his assertion. To make the conclusion more conclusive, the author should make a more convictive and reasonable survey to get their educational target. In addition, they should take actual steps to achieve their objectives and improve their education.
