Perhaps nothing, we been told today, is more controversial in the domain of history than the debate over whether most crucial role in the process of history is played by the elite or by the mass people. I, disagree with speaker’s assertion, am inclined to the view that both of them propelled the development of history together and it is impossible to identify who are more important than the other.

First of all, those Great Men, holding more profound views and owning more courage, in the history plays an important role in their time. In the realm of technology and science, it is scientists who have important new findings, which may even change the whole world. Thanks to their brilliant intellect and steadfast determination, these individuals are easier to break the old system of knowledge and then build new ones. For example, Dmitri Mendeleev took a seat in chemistry and physics history by her immortal founding of the periodic table of elements. But for Mendeleev, the development of chemistry history will be slower at least 10 years. Then turn to the field of politics, these outermost politicians, making crucial decisions and giving right guidance to the followed people, shaped history and the actions of the mass people which made great contributions to the history. Take Franklin D. Roosevelt(FDR), one of the most famous presidents in United States, for example, no one can deny his significant role in improving the economy of US during the worldwide economic crisis and working for the peace of world in World War II . FDR, together with other famous politicians at that time, pointed out a right way for the human beings and as a result leading us to a better society.

Besides making contributions to people of contemporary, these famous individuals also have great influence on the successors. Actually, This very likely accounts for people tend to pay more attention to those great men when studying history instead of the groups of people. As we all know, it is usually easier for us to remember what had happened in history by these heroes, as well as their contributions. Additionally, by studying those important prominent figures in politics and history, we are able to appreciate specific characters and take them as role models. Their great determinations, their hopefulness towards life, their thorough understanding of both society and science have all encouraged us a lot.

However, the role of individuals cannot be too much emphasized, since the mass people make the most part of history and their critical role should be laid enough emphasis. Firstly, it is the majority of people who make everything into reality. Elites are the cores of the history, while the mass people are also crucial to achieve those good ideas and breakthrough. This can be aptly exemplified and illustrated by the case of French Revolution.
Through revolution, French society underwent an epic transformation as feudal, aristocratic and religious privileges evaporated under a sustained assault from liberal political groups and the masses on the streets. Undoubtedly, it is the people who make it success. As a matter of factor, no leader is powerful enough to be independent on the mass people’s proponent. And no scientist is gifted enough to discard all the intellectual inspirations he receives from the mass people in his lifetime.


In sum, in the process of history, both the individuals and the common people play important roles, firmly connected with each other. When studying history, we should not only pay attention to those outstanding ones, but also to the mass, since neither of them can be overlooked or overemphasized.
