TOPIC: ARGUMENT113 - The following was published by a consumer protection agency.

"Three years ago, So-Low launched a nationwide ad campaign, focusing heavily on sunny regions and distributing free sunglasses there. But although So-Low sunglasses cost less than higher-priced brands, they block a smaller proportion of the Sun's rays, including the type of rays known to damage the eyes even when the person wearing the sunglasses feels no discomfort. A recent study suggests that So-Low sunglasses can actually increase the risk of damage to people's eyes by creating a false sense of security. The study shows a sharp increase in the incidence of vision problems in the sunny regions over the past three years. These findings suggest that anyone concerned about eye damage from the Sun should avoid So-Low brand and instead either pay for higher-priced brands or wear no sunglasses at all."

In this argument, grounding on the study on the people’s eyes in the sunny regions, showing that So-Low sunglasses block small kinds of the Sun’s rays and were distributed freely to the people on sunny regions, the author accordingly makes a conclusion that consumers should reject So-Low sunglasses and should either buy higher-priced brands or wear no glasses at all. At first glance, this argument seems conclusive, however, further demonstration discloses that it neglect some significant concerns which should be considered within this argument.

First of all, the author holds an argument that So-Low sunglasses are at a low price and they impede a small part of Sun’s rays, involved the deleterious kinds, which are influential quality for sunglasses. Whereas, the author provide no statistics or evidence to demonstrate this kind of sunglasses has this feature. It is likely that this argument is coined by So-Low’s competitors.

What’s more, So-Low’s advertisement and allocation of free sunglasses on the sunny regions doesn’t mean that the residents there would buy or wear the sunglasses. Maybe they incline to wear sun-hats instead of the sunglasses. Besides, the author cites a study to show that a increase in the frequency of vision problem, but he doesn’t show any details about the pathogeny of the vision problem or what are the types of the sun’s rays that bring about it on the sunny regions, thereby drawing a unreasonable assertion that it is the sunglasses’ fault that causes the problem. Just like the author says, they block a smaller proportion of the Sun's rays and it is likely that the situations in those regions will come worse without the prevention of So-Low sunglasses.

Last but not the least, given the assertion of this study is rational, it merely limits in the district where are sunny. At the same time, the author advises all the people who concerns about the eye damage should follow his suggestions. People concerns about the eye damage may live in various districts involved the ones which sunshine time is short, then this study is inappropriate for all of them. Additionally, the author’s suggestion that the people should spend more money on the sunglasses or just abandon them is somewhat opinionated for the reason that it is most probably that there are sunglasses which is both the ones that block the harmful sun’s rays and inexpensive.


In the final analysis, the conclusion made by the author fails to substantiate his assertion. To make the conclusion more conclusive, the author should make clear that what is the kind of sun ‘ray or the pathogeny that lead to the vision problem. Besides, he should investigate that how many people frequently use the So-Low sunglasses in sunny days on those regions. At last, the author who is in charged with the consumer protection should make reasonable suggestions.
