I agree with the speaker to the extent that the human basic desires in the past are not changed significantly and that by studying this similarity bring better understanding of history to us at present. In fact, humans have changed a lot on both material and spiritual level and history offered us many meaningful lessons and inspirations.

The statement overlooks other, even more significant ones, benefits of the study of the past. Learning about human civilizations in the past help us appreciate brilliant culture and distinct life style with nowadays, in some sense, this process of studying the past inspire us to better amply our culture at present. Consider, for example, more and more fashionable dress tend to present us a sense of past, and in fact that many culture shows of the past attract lots of audience deeply. Learning about the mistakes of the past warn us not to take this mistakes repeatedly. For example, we are slowly coming to know that certain human action, such as over hunting, environmental pollution, and deforestation, has caused many species become extinct. If proper measures are not taken, we humans will eventually die out from this eath one day. Moreover, the depletion of ozone layers of atmospheric, which has warmed the earth to the point that it threatens the very survival of human species. Also, we are now learning that the finding of nuclear matter not only bring to human inexhaustible resource of energy but also bring to world nuclear weapons which could destroy our earth hundreds times.

Another problems with the statement is that it undervalue the very significant differences between peoples of different time periods. Material life and social moral value are the two main distinct characteristics between now and past. Looking back to the past to see the various effects of various human behaviours have on the better our lives can show the fact that our life style has changed dramatically due to quick development of technical and scientific fields. For example, in China, it cost few days to transport some cargoes from Hangzhou to Shanghai, the two big cities in China with distance less than 200 kilometers, by carriage or on foot in the past. However, at present, at most two hours are needed if they are shipped via express way or high-speed railway. On the other hand, our social moral values which reflect human mental field development have changed essentially accompanying with the material progress. The discrimination between while American and Black American, though exist now, are diminishing gradually; the social status of women are now equal to men in large part of the world. In short, we humans progress day by day on both material level and spiritual level.

Admittedly, studying the history we may realize that our basic desires have reminded constantly over record time and likely to last for a long time—in terms of freedom, equality, democracy. And on the other hand, many valuable experience in the past are very suitable to be applied on various fields at present. Consider, for example, the ancient Chinese author Sun Tzu's book "The Art of War", today's military commanders and even business leaders gather valuable information that allows them to operate more efficiently and effectively. Moreover, the thought of Teach according to his ability from "The Analects of Confucius" has been proven that very meet to our education method at present.

To sum up, history informs us that human basic desire has not changed and some valuable experience in the past are also suitable nowadays. Yet, history has also told us that human beings are changing dramatically on both material and spiritual life and offered us profound lessons to avoid taking mistakes repeatedly.
