In a technologically advanced society today, mass media has profoundly influenced and changed people’ life. Thus, the debate of whether new communications devices exert positive effect on people has been brought to public attention recently. The speaker argues that these emotionless tools might eventually hinder meaningful and thoughtful communications. In my view, some interactive communications media such as email and telephone surely bonds people more closely, but on the contrary, still some unidirectional media like TV makes people’ thinking and conversation degenerate to senseless.

To begin with, it is no doubted that people nowadays actually benefits from high-speed communication technology like e-mail, and telephone. In the earlier times, for example, people mainly relied on writing letters to connect with their kin and friends living in faraway places. As these letters, or replies, arrived at people’ hands, it mostly passed through several months. Fortunately, unlike their forefathers, people today could easily exchange the message through advanced means. Electronic mail, eliminating the obstacle of distance, allows people to send and to receive their ‘feeling package’ more rapidly and efficiently. Telephone, especially mobile phone, enables people to connect others whom they desired every time and everywhere. Moreover, even importantly, both email and phone belong to two-ways electronic communications, so people could interact and share their feelings with each other. Through these interactive processes, people’ minds are inevitably stimulated by various ideas and always have to response to them; therefore, two-ways mass media, not unidirectional ones, apparently are helpful not only to enhance people’ relationships but also create meaningful and thoughtful communication.

However, it is not the case when coming to one-way communication media such as television. Television programs, full of various advertisings and implications, always infuse people concepts mostly from attempts toward making profits. Moreover, in my observation and experience, that overly watching TV shows would ossify one’s thinking ability. For example, while people sit on sofa and watches TV shows, their brain, mostly, has no response to what they receive. Thus, if you ask them to recount what they have watched before, most of their answers might be “I forgot it!! ”. Nevertheless, those who love watching television programs might argue that various shows provide them many talking points with their friends. However, it is doubted that how many these subjects would serve as positive roles to create a “meaningful and thoughtful” conversation among people. Possibly few. Instead of helping people develop profound discussions, most talking points coming from TV shows only push persons sinking into the environment that full of gossipy conversations.

In addition, although providing people more convenient communication ways, modern electronic media hardly replaces the traditional face-to-face ones. Because what electronic media transfers is merely symbols, sound or images, however, it lacks the ability of exchanging the sense of touch, another important mode human showing their feelings, which only could be expressed through the face-to-face communication like body language. Sometimes, for instance, a simple hug for grieved ones is warmer and even more meaningful than hundreds of condolence letters; a simple pat for depressed ones gives more encouragement than thousands of phones that wants to urge them. In fact, there is ample evidence that subtle body language takes a significant part of interactions among people and thus could not be substituted by any modern communication method.

In conclusion, with interactive mass media, like email and phone, people are tied more intimately. People’ thinking ability and conversations, however, will become ossified, if overly relying on the unidirectional communication media such as television shows. Furthermore, traditional face-to-face communication including essential body language could not be neglected even in today’s modern society.
