头一回写Argument, 不限时

[6]The following was written as a part of an application fora small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroewould be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz clubis 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the localmarket all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazzmusicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide studyindicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazzentertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

The proposed jazz music club named C Note seems to make money in the cityof Monroe atthe first glance. After all, the club is close to the local market in Monroe, where jazz is extremely popular. A typical jazz fan will also spend lot of money on jazz entertainment according to the nationwide study mentioned in the argument. However, there areseveral necessary elements to be considered when evaluating the profitability of this club.

Foremost, despite of the fact that the C Note club will be the nearest club in Monroewhile the other counterparts are 65 miles away, there is still no evidence thatthe C Note club will have all the local market. People always go to a music club no only to enjoy their favorite music, but also to make friends with the one who has the same interest. If most of their friends live at the other side of the city, which is far away from the C Note club, then he or she would like to drive a long way to the club at the other side of the city, regardless ofthe only convenience brought to him/her by the C Note club. On the other hand, the environment in the C Note club may not attract all the jazz fans. Maybesome jazz fans like some specific jazz music which the C Note club can notprovide; maybe the C Note club does not have enough area for people to dancewith their friend.

Secondly, even if the C Note club has good location in the city, there isno evidence to support the popularity of jazz in Monroe in the future. Maybe most of the people who attended the Monroe'sjazz festival last summer came from the nearby cities to enjoy the music fromsome well-known jazz musicians who lived there. If, this year, these famousmusicians move to another city where they can have more fans than Monroe, thenthe jazz music will not be so popular as before in Monroe. Even, some fans willalso move to the same city to live closely with their stars.

Finally, the nationwide study results can not represent the special conditions in Monroe. The jazz fans in the city may not be as rich as the national level. Maybe thejobs they done do not allow them to spend $1000 per year on jazz entertainment other than their daily living expenses, because they did not get high education and can not find a better-paid job. The fans there come to the music club onlyonce a month or even less and they would not like to spend much money on it.

As a conclusion, to evaluate the profitability of a jazz music club in Monroe, besides the proper location selection, a localsurvey about the popularity and the living standards in Monroe should be conducted. With the information of the number of jazz fans in the city and the amount of money they willing to spend on jazz entertainment, we can get a better evaluation resulton the club.
