I'll say more about no. 18:
1. Were people forced to defend an unwarranted ideas, however he may be forced to defend it, still, he will finally stand on the opposite side and  therefore go against it steadily.
2. When it comes to an idea that has its great merits, despite of the determined intention to be against it, people will not fail to find its value and turn to support it.
3. Therefore, defending an idea againt contrasting views is not the only way to discover the value of an idea, while the key lies whether the idea is inherently valuable.

Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea
从字面的意思来理解，的确可以反驳说如果哪个观点本身没有价值，更无从谈起discover its value了！

但是我觉得后句话，does one really discover the value of that idea，其实已经隐含着那个观点可能没有价值的意思。真正地发现它的价值，是不是也包括发现它的缺陷与不足甚至全盘否定？当然这个理解比较宽泛，不一定正确，但在日常生活中我们的确经常说这种带有歧义的话。
另外，这个题目很明显的意图是让你分析doubts and debates 与真理、价值之间的关系，某个观点是否是真理、是否有价值肯定不应该成为你分析的重点内容，甚至也不应该是重点之一。

不过还是得承认，盈盈的这个理解是够critical的了。有时候这个critical 可以为你赢得分数，但有时候人家可能会认为你是钻牛角尖。标准实在是很难掌握，全靠评卷人的感觉了。所以我建议你 在存在较大争议的情况下，尽量采用保险点的理解！

这一题有点晕了，难道不是说因为对某个信念的sincerity and conviction 所以思维敏捷而善辩吗？理解的深才能说的出来啊
