In ourdaily life, we are so natural to judge a person and form a general impressionthrough the way he looks, dresses and acts. When entering a new circumstance,we are always prone to make approaches to some special strangers and avoidanother ones, even though they are all unfamiliar to us. If asked the reason,the answer maybe that they look nice, according to their overall appealingdress, their smile, the facial expression and the way they shake hands with us.Does people's appearance and behavior really tells us something valuable?


In manyrespects, we actually can perceive people's attitudes and interests throughtheir appearance and behaviors. We can easily pick out a pedant among thecrowd. They always look serious and the clothes they dress are as formal as thediplomat, which reflects their rigid attitude in the matters of life. But thefans of Hip-Hop music, who prefer to enjoy life and live free, may dye theirhair colorful and try many eccentric clothes. Every individual, driven by theirinward interest and attitude, chooses the way they show up themselves, boththrough appearance and behaviors.

Furthermore,these attitudes and interests can be influenced the ideas and values of asociety. The values of a society are views which are largely shared by theirmembers about what is important. Forty years ago in China, when we have noadequate life necessities, we put high value on work and simple life. People atthat time are diligent, devoting their time in producing more products andtheir attitudes toward life is to conservative. Any amusement and preener canbe regarded as guilt. Nowadays, with the development and opening of ourcountry, people's ideas changed and they begin to chase diversities of life.

However,the appearance and behavior of people is not the onlydeterminant to acquire the society's ideas and values.Living in the society, our deeds are more or less shaped by it. Sometimes wefeign, sometimes succumb. Only with deep probe into the moral basis, culturaltrends and the other indispensable factors which can affect a society can wedecipher the inward values behind our exterior appearance.

Insummary, even though the effectiveness of people’sappearance in revealing a society’s basic ideas and values should not bedenied, some interior values of the society cannot be simply reflected by theway people dress and acts, and therefore it required us to resort to morereliable information.
