4.Thefollowing was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town—Adams Realty and FitchRealty—Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams'revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home salesthat averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adamssell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it tookmore than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed itwith Adams, and it took only one month. Thus,if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."
1. The author compares the two real estate firms with their quantities ofagent that F has fewer agents than A is unsubstantial. Perhaps F’s agents arevery large while those of A are small. Perhaps F has more agents in other areabut A has not.
2. More agents means more employment, sometimes too many workers willreduce the efficiency.
3. A’s home sales is much higher and faster than F’s last year. Perhapsthe reason is that the houses which A sales have a high value themselves.
4. The arguer listed A ten years ago and F a year ago, there are too manythings would change. There is no direct relation.

5.Thefollowing appeared in the business section of a newspaper.
"Given that the number of people in our country with some form ofarthritis is expected to rise from 40 million to 60 million over the nexttwenty years, pharmaceutical companies that produce drugs for the treatment ofarthritis should be very profitable. Many analysts believe that in ten yearsBecton Pharmaceuticals, which makes Xenon, the best-selling drug treatment forarthritis, will be the most profitable pharmaceutical company. But the patenton Xenon expires in three years, and other companies will then be able toproduce a cheaper version of the drug. Thus, it is more likely that in tenyears the most profitable pharmaceutical company will be PerkinsPharmaceuticals, maker of a new drug called Xylan, which clinical studies showis preferred over Xenon by seven out of ten patients suffering from the mostextreme cases of arthritis."
1. We do not know the region of the report claims that the number ofpeople with arthritis will rise. Nobody knows what will happen in the futureexactly.
2. There is no clear data shows that XY will be profitable. Even if XY isa specific medicine, thereis no evidence to support that patients are willing to buy it. In addition, wedo not know if it can cure general symptom only through the treatment of mostextreme cases.
3. If X is still useful to cure the general arthritis, it will not beplaced by XY. 重症的少。
4. There is no evidence to support that profits of BP will reduce.Although other companies can also produce the medicine, BP will have moreconfidence in market. BP can develop other kinds of new drugs or change its tactics.
5. The author’s assertion depends on all the circumstances withoutchanging and is lack of analyzing information.

7. Thefollowing appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for AnnGreen, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for FrankBraun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members arenot protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number offactories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, andthe local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratoryillnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview willcertainly be solved."
1. There is no evidence to support that if A can be the mayor, theenvironmental problems will be solved certainly. We know less of A, and theonly information about A is that he is a member of GEC----an environmental organization.
2. The arguer negatives F only for the reason that he is a member of thetown council ---a group cares less of environmental. The author asserts F willnot protect the environment merely by the reason given above which isunsubstantial. Perhaps F is also a environmental protector.
3. Even if the information given above is granted, there is no clear datato show that the increasing air pollution is caused by the new factories. Perhapsthe number of cars in C is increasing as well. Perhaps these factories are environmental protection enterprise.
4.
Most respiratory illnesses areflu or cold which people will be caught by various ways easily.
5. To elect a mayor, we should consider a series of things, such as individual, characteristic, capacity, appetency and some other factors. Only by whether onecan solve the environmental problems is unfair. |
