Issue 208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
The speaker claims that people's appearance and behavior reflects their attitudes and interests and , moreover, that we can know much about a society's ideas and values by watching the appearance and behavior of its people. Although this two claims have merits worth our attention, I disagree with the speaker on both claims on the whole.
Consider the first claim. It is well acknowledged that people's attitudes and interests are usually expressed through their appearance and behavior. Therefore, we can obtain much about one's attitude and interest from his appearance and behavior without no doubt. For instance, one often dressed in sports wears may be interest in some kind of sport, while another always wearing jeans is likely to love fashions. Also, in most cultures, nodding one's head is the sign of his agreement, while shaking his head represents his attitude of disagreement.
However, people's appearance and behavior may be influnced by many other factors besides their appearance and behavior. In many cases, one's appearance and behavior fails to reveal his genuine attitude and interest due to other factors. An apt illustration of this point is the actors in a film who are responsible to show us the roles' attitudes and interests. As is known to all, it is highly likely that these appearance and behavior are not the reflection of their real attitudes and interests. Specifically, the actors who act negative roles in films are not bad guys actually. Hence we cannot judge one's attitude and interest only by his appearances and behaviors, since one's appearance and behavior is comprehensive result of many factors.
Consider the second claim. A society consist of many people sharing a lot of characters. The society's ideas and values can partly be embodied by its people's appearance and behavior. For example, in the Arabia counties, the women are always dressed in black clothes, which is a miniature of religious faith in these countries. There is no denying that people's appearance and behavior in one society deliver some information to us in judging the siociety's ideas and values.
But there are many other factors worth our consideration to judge a society's ideas and values correctly, such as its history. Every sociey has own history, which explain the form of the society's ideas and values.Take American society for example, American history tells us that America is a society where many kinds of culture exist side by side. Just by observing the appearance and behavior of its people, we may be confused by the complicated situations. At times, people's
appearance and behavior may deceive our eyes, although providing much informaton about the society.
In conclusion, I'm opposed to the speaker's both claims. The way of people look, dress, and act is not enough to reveal their attitudes and interests. At the same time, in the process of undersanding one society's ideas and values, we must refer other facors, such as history, besides its people's appearance and behavior. |
