144 "It is the artist, not thecritic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person whoevaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
翻译:是艺术家而不是批评家,给了社会一些永久的价值。
Some people claim that critic provide art works of everlasting value tosociety, while others argue that it is by artist whom create these art works. From my point of view, these assertions are tremendously narrow. Artist and critichave different functions and both of them give society something of lastingvalue.
To begin with, it is undeniable that art works are created by artists, not by critics. True arts are the intuitionistic reflections to artists’ imaginations, creativities and passions. The real value of art occurs at the moment we encounter it----a visceral impact on our sense, spirits and souls. For instance, it is Schubert who wrote Ave Maria, clarifying our mind; it is Leonardo da Vinci who drew Mona Lisa, displaying the most beautiful and mysterious smile; it is J. K. Rollin who gave birth to Harry Porter, making us laugh and cry. The value of art depends on the comprehension and introject between artists and readers. Just as Shakespeare said that if there are one thousand readers, you will find one thousand different Hamlets in the readers' eyes.
However, it does not mean that critics have no utilities in providingthings of everlasting value. Critics are also members of readers but they aremore professional than any other, having certain insights that the laypersonswould not. The critics read works and make comments, with which we can sharedifferent ideas and get better understanding – they add condiment of variousflavors to enrich our mind. The critics’ greatest effect is that they can helpthe art which was ignored by masses in the past to emerge its original value tothe public. They can also help artists promote their works. If critics’constructive criticisms are taken to heart, better works will be resulted in.
In addition, without artists, those famous art works will never appear, andthere would be no critics. And at the same time, if there are not critics, amajority of art with true value would be ignored and finally disappeared. Forexample, later proper critics, the works of Van Gogh would be sunk in garbagecan for centuries. Only when artists and critics work together will the artworks of everlasting value be reflected in masses. For instance, as almost theonly one art type for expressing emotions for hundreds of years in Europe, religious art always favors the subjects of peopleand stories from the Bible and all religious buildings, mainly churches, werefull of those colorful paintings, from which we can abstract some mainstreamideas of that time.
In sum, artists create artworks while critics discover them and help masses to comprehend their value intuitionally.Only when these two kinds of people work together will we enjoy the art worksof lasting value. |
