38.In the age of television, reading booksis not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watchingtelevision as they can by reading books.

It is tempting to agree with the speaker thattelevision has substituted the reading and become the primary way of learning asthe osmosis of television lead people spending more and more time to watchtelevision for acquiring information and knowledge. It is true when people havepurpose to get up-to-date news. However, in other cases the speaker makes alogic mistake. Even the television has loomed so large for means of learning,the superior status of reading would not necessarily be superseded for itsirreplaceable advantages.

Admittedly, television has its overwhelmingpower and attracts people to spend much time on it by offering instant news,vivid images and countless information. People could not informed with dailynews by books, but when turn on television, flood of news involving in almostevery aspect would never make people fall behind the pace of world. Even ineducation, once was thought to be actively detrimental by some professionaleducationists when it was firstly invented, television has inevitably becomeone of the most effective tools of teaching. By television images, teachers andprofessor are enable to simplify and vivify knowledge which used to berecondite on textbook, and stimulates students’ interests. And also, televisionmakes resources such as open courses in top universities accessible to everypeople living on earth.

However, theantagonistic attitude towards television of some professional educationistscomes in reasons. First of all, television leads to a passive accepting learningstyle, going against to the initial purpose of education which aims tostimulate critical thinking and active exploration. Books, on contrary, promoteimagination through turning words into images by readers’ own minds; enhancethe ability of logic by analysis of relationship among paragraphs; andcultivate divergent thinking by allowing readers to pause to think wheneverthey want. It also explains why some movie versions of novel are barelysatisfactory. Let alone the literary masterpieces and classics, the popular novelsuch as Harry Potter encounters numerous negative critics when adapted for thescreen, and until now, the book remains irreplaceable to its fans. After all, connotationof the words can be hardly converted to images.

Thesecond reason to prevent television from becoming the primary mean of study isthe essence of the mass media, which depends upon reaching large numbers. Inorder to satisfy the favor of mass public and make maximum profits forproducers, television has no advantage to propaganda knowledge of specificfield. Even a person who has watched hundreds of episodes of Discovery and beenfamiliar with popular science could not become a nuclear engineer unless he hasread systematic contexts and accepted complete training. What we get fromtelevision shows are most alluring advertisement, series soap operas and newson current affairs, far away from reaching standard the education required.

To sumup, I fundamentally agree with the speaker that peoplecan gain as much by watching television as they can by reading books whenabsorbing instant news. However, when comes to the education, reading alwayshas unparalleled advantages. Even the televisions deeply permeate into people’slife, the main way of study a specific field is still reading.
