Issue91: (孙远书号)
“The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority.”
Syllabus:
1. 部分赞同,因为要避免不合理且过度无意义之质疑
2. 权威不代表真理,权威是经验与智能的累积,,但权威仍会犯错如Ptolemy、Dr. Lee Forest
3. 质疑权威有助社会的进步,如John Brown、Copernicus
4. 过份无理质疑的坏处,教育系统要负起责任责任指导人民质疑的真义及做有意义的质疑。
5. 结论
In a society that is full of various authorities, the debate of whether people should be allowed to suspicion authority has drawn public attention. Some people believe that a well-being society would be introduced if its people question authority. Others claim that that disobeying the authority conventionally regarded as the social standards would engender a chaos society. Here I will argue in favor of that a society would be improved when its members “reasonably question” authority.
To begin with, people have to realize the definition of authority: It seems, to me, a man who owns well-informed knowledge or abundant experience at any given field would be respected as an authority. However, it should be clarified that the erudition and abundant experience do not present everything or even truths. In fact, authority sometimes makes mistakes. For example, Ptolemy, an Egypt astronomer of 2nd century, advocated that Earth is the center of the cosmos and each planet revolved around it; Dr. Lee Forest, the Father of radio, said that no matter how science get advanced, human beings would never be able to land on the moon. These assertions had been once received as truths or the limits of mankind, but they seem like the jokes today. Thus, even though authority might have enough knowledge or experience, sometimes they still make mistakes. So people should be allowed to question authority.
Secondly, it is beneficial for promoting society progress that people are brave in suspicion authority. For instance, no one doubted the correctness of Ptolemy’ theory which has been accepted for several centuries until Copernicus, a Polish astronomer of 15th century, who suspected Ptolemy’s “classical” view addressed another theory that Earth revolved around the sun. Although Copernicus’ theory had ever been unfairly judged as a ridiculous study, today his theory has become a part of modern astronomy’s foundation, which meanwhile settled the groundwork of tomorrow’s space exploration eventually taking humans “landing on the moon”. In fact, there is ample evidence that the progress of a society is partly based on questioning authority. John Brown, a forerunner of abolitionism, was brave to suspect and then resist the slave system of American government. After Brown laying down his life for this ideal, Americans began to reconsider the true essence of democracy, which finally evolved and entrenched today’s healthier democratic system. Therefore, apparently, being brave in suspicion authority would be a significant driving force for a developed society.
However, those prudently obeying the traditional experience might point out that suspicion would produces unnecessary conflicts among people and then bring the breakdown of society. Admittedly, it might be true when the members of society unreasonably question others. Under the unfavorable circumstance that people unreasonably interrogate with each other, the relationship between people would be collapsed and then the cooperation mechanism would no longer exist, which eventually destroys the society as a whole. Therefore, for avoiding this dreadful phenomenon, education systems should take the responsibility to inculcate people the true meaning of suspicion as well as teach them “how to question” others reasonably and “how to accept the question from others” pleasurably. As long as people keep the appropriate concept and method of critic, the progressing direction of society would not be strayed.
In conclusion, reviewing the history of social development, we could easily find plenty evidence of that adequate and reasonable question serves as positive role for promoting the progress of society. In addition, for avoiding the conflicts among individuals and the disintegration of society, education systems should take the task to prepare people the true concept of suspicion as well as cultivate them not only to question but also to “accept” the question from others.
