"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira VistaCollege, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers fromprospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent ofthe seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seekingemployment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, andonly half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. Tohelp Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses inbusiness and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to helpstudents with their resumés and interviewing skills."

The argument seems plausible at firstglance, however, are neither cogent nor valid in fact. Furthermore, theconclusion to offer more courses in business and computer technology and hireadditional job counselors may mask other, potentially more significant, causesof the presented low employment rate.
As the indispensable premise of theargument, the comparison between Green Mountain and Mira Vista lacks thesupport of statistics. Except the 90% rate, there are no figures like how muchpercent of Green Mountain graduates found a full-time job within 3 months andhow much percent of them were employed in their major field of study. Thesalary level, one of the most indexes in job seeking, doesn't be taken intoconsideration. Without these figures, it is perspicuously unfair to compareMira Vista with Green Mountain roughly. Furthermore, one year is not a longenough time frame.
Even if the Mira Vista has comparativelylower employment rate in any aspects, the argument is weakened by its assumption that the lower rate is attributed to the lack ofbusiness and computer technology courses and job counselors. It assumes acorrelation boils down to causal relationship, however, without providingsufficient evidence. It is possible that Green Mountain's advantage comes fromthe fact that its faculty of Green Mountain are more adroit to instruct ratherthan more courses.
The argument could also be in doubt sincethe Mira Vista seems to ignore its recent situation and individual advantage. If there are enough business and computer technology courses and jobcounselors, instead of offering or hiringmore, the college's board should consider the quality of these courses andcounselors. Furthermore, there is no evidence to show that more computercourses are necessary. Meanwhile, if Mira Vista is an art college or does take advantage in art, business and computercourses are not that essential. Further, Mira Vista's graduates, especially whohas majors related with arts, may be more prone to be employed not in theirmajor field, or be freelancers.
The conclusion might be helpful and presumablyenhance Mira Vista's employment rate. However, before any decisions are made, amore comprehensive analysis of all necessary elements is essential. A speciousconfidence in one decision may be worse than no decisions at all. |
