77"People today are too individualistic. Instead of pursuing self-centered, separate goals, people need to understand that satisfaction comes from working for the greater good of the family, the community, or society as a whole."
In a society where human being’s independence has been reinforced by pursing individual achievement and self-actualization, the idea of individualism is frequently as exhorted as a leap forward from the bondage of social norms and banal convention. But I fundamentally see the speaker’s main point as reasonable since people today seem to exaggerate the importance of individualism which will result in, if not properly handled, a social chaos marked by ignorance towards the benefit of family, the community or the society as a whole.
In the old days when people are constantly under the threaten of nature disaster and bewilderment of severe social problems, their sense of security and assurance of man power is so meager that they have to seek shelter and protection from the family, the community and the society as a whole. Another factor that contribute people’s proclivity towards conformism is that society at that time are less tolerant by a person’s unconventional behavior which will be categorized as irresponsibility towards family and social duty. In sharp contrast with the above statement, no period in history than today do people realize that after centuries of struggle with the affliction of their inability to solve social problems and submission to capricious natural catastrophe, they finally become masters of their own destiny. As a result individualism runs wild and egoism has swelled unparalleled to any period in human history.
Some people may argue that the greater good of the family, the community or society lies in the greater good of individuals which is justified since each person acts as a element serving the general welfare of the social fabric. I admit that proper handled pursing of self-centered goals do contribute instead of hindering the development of social system. But if cautiously observe what happens everyday, we find this is not true in most cases because individuals has attach their personal achievement so much importance that they fail to consider any perilous consequences brought out by the selfish wrong doing. Success and happiness are the only dogmas and life-long convictions enchased in their hearts and they cynically condemn any form of sacrifice for the sake of society as “stupid doing”. This is well illustrated in a series of social problems such as the increase of divorce rate, single-parent family, abortion, vandalism of public property. Take the US as an example, teenagers were reported by engaging in all kinds of behaviors without carefully considering the social consequence of their conduct. Underage sex behavior, drug abuses, delinquency are only a few of those conduct which were dismissed frivolously by them as personal matter and a heroic doing to free from social restraints.
Realizing the damaging consequence, we should be well aware that properly controlled pursing of individual goals is beneficial since the overall well being lies in the success of each member of this organic but at the same time, we should watch that no one is permitted by build his own goals above the general interest of society as whole. After all, no conscious citizen of a democratic society hopes to live in a chaotic and selfish society where social system was degenerated into useless and nominal. It is a time for us today to focus on individual contribution and reshape our value systems in order to convince our next generations that no matter how developed a society is and how far human rights marches, responsibility toward the family, the community and the society is a forever theme occupying the most dominated part in our evaluation against which one should be the priority |
