History, as a record of the past, is the treasure of human's wisdom and creation. In many people's eyes, studying history is just the affairs of historians and only expresses its value when it concerns our daily lives like our work, study and other activities. But it is too narrow and subjective to limit the value of historical study into effects we can feel in our life, without perceiving an overall picture of its value.
Admittedly, some historical outcomes don't have any effect on our contemporary life and seem worthless. The world is changing day by day and even the most authoritive views may be testified wrong at the next minute. But the content of historical study is always involved in discovering the real condition of the era past. Therefore, it can not give us some applicable methods to solve problems we face in our daily life. It has nothing to do with us knowing what kind of weapons the ancient people use to fight or how the first inventor invent compass or paper when we are stuck in job hunting and stake transaction.
However, many events happened before or life stories of some celebrities can serve for our daily life in an indirect way. History is a hidden treasure containing innumerous examples which tells us a general principle about what we should do and what we should not. For our working, according to many events about the relationship between emperor and his chancellor, we get to know how to get well with our boss and what deeds should be forbidden that may irritate him. For our self-perfecting, we can learn precious lessons from the success of failure of nearly all kinds of people to draw a conclusion about what characters should we pursue and what deficiencies should we correct. Knowing this may radically changes our work style, our study, our family relationship and uncountable aspects of our daily life.
Furthermore, history can also give us some inspirations when we are living aimlessly and passively. Every time when we are fed with the mechanical life and our job, we can look up to history to understand how humans in the past find out the beauty of life and create spiritual treasure for the next generation. Considering Helen Keller, a girl who are born blind, but struggling to overcome his disability and learn to live, to read with hand, to acquire five languages and even write a series of books, in which are filled with ardent love for the world they live. His story and his spirit have changed lots of persons' life and continue to have an effect on the generation to come. Having recognized these effects, how can we insist that historical study which is irrelevant to our daily life has no value?
Moreover, the value of history is not merely embodied in our daily life, but in areas beyond it. For a country, history is the base of its uniqueness and can be an instruction of its existence. In this era of globalization, only with it can this country prevent itself from being assimilated and be available to communication with other cultures, for his history tells strangers how the country become what it is. For our human beings, history records our achievements and crisis. Through the history of environment, we are warned of our reckless exploitation of resources and the result, told by history, is the terrible revenge of nature.
In sum, historical study, though containing many contents which are irrelevant to our daily life and seems valueless on the surface, actually is of great significance not only in our daily life, but also in our country and even all mankind. |
