TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Young women choose
cosmetics making a beautiful look, while old madams select dark-colored dress to show their graveness, which attributes to different stages of life and thereby different attitudes reflected by their choices. That is to say, it is not hard for one to tell people from the way they appear. Nonetheless, in order to distinguish a society, it takes much more than the appearance or behavior since more sophisticated factors are included.

Individuals appearing and behaving depends on their characters containing attitudes and interests. Do you know the Beat Generation in America in 1970s? They were the rebels of the society and main stream culture: they hated wars and advocated peace in the world, they loved rock music and believed in the truthfulness and trust between man and man, they lived like beggars and wanderers as well as children with innocence. Among all the features they carried, the most significant one is the way they appeared: long hairs and long dresses without concerning about gender. Even now, when a boy has long hair, people regard him someone eccentric , not to mention at the age after the World War Two when every one wore suits and flat hair style seemed like the whole society is well-mannered.
On the contrary, holding the rebellious spirit, they didn't choose to wear long dress and hair on purpose at the beginning, but they just didn't care about their appearance and merely pursued the satisfaction of hearts, which gradually became the symbol of rebelliousness. In this view, appearance or behavior certainly reflects the attitude and interests of the individual consciously or unconsciously.

However, in terms of a big society, to tell about the ideas and values, the appearance and behavior of its people is far from sufficiency. Although the beat generation in 1970s was one of the important and outstanding groups of America at that time, it is not accurate to make the conclusion that the whole society held the rebellious value. As I have mentioned above, the beat generation going against the main stream culture and society, though it was of great value in history and literature, still can't represent the America's ideas of the special age, even more inaccurate to distinguish America through the appearance of one group of the society.
Londoners often go outside with a umbrella, which can't be interpreted that Londoners are timid and over-cautious. It is just because the changeable weather in London. Therefore, to tell a complicated society, one can't depend on the only information about the appearance and behavior of its people.

In sum, though certain appearance and behaviors is formed within the ideas and values, conversely, to tell the ideas and values is a difficult task which calls for more detail facts and evidences.
