我的处女作。。欢迎板砖西红柿。。

People’s attitudes and interests are reflected by the way they look, dress, and act. Ideas and values are the deeper things that behind people’s attitudes and interests. Therefore, to some degrees, you can learn a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

To some people, their appearances and behaviors reveal their attitudes and interests. The inside attitudes and thoughts of a person determine what kind of clothes he prefers. For instance, by wearing colorful clothes, dandies show us that they pay much attention to dress. And a person often wearing sand shoes suggests that he loves sports. Similarly, a person’s acts result from the thinking in his (or her) mind. Seeing your new neighbor go to church every Sunday, then you can conclude that he is a Christian.

However, sometimes we can’t tell much about people’s attitudes and interests only by observing the way they look, dress and act. For example, the personnel of Mcdonald's  are compelled to wear uniforms. And we often decide what to wear and what to do depend on the occasion we will appear but not we want to. More complicatedly, a girl wears mini skirt may not because she is liberal but due to the hot weather. So we can’t learn people completely simply by observing the outsides.

In several respects, the values and ideas of a society can be seen by the appearance and behavior of its people. For instance, we can conceive people's compassion when they willingly help old people and children. Moreover, because people's behavior is constrained by social fixed values, ethics and moral norms, people's action toward an affair can tell us some values and ideas of the society. And this is also reflected in the rules and laws that people set down to restrain the whole society. The values of a society can often be identified by noting which people receive honor or respect .For example, Mother Teresa was given the name “Saint of the Gutters. ” for her dedicating the majority of her life to helping the poorest of the poor in India. And Surveys show that voters in the US would be reluctant to elect an atheist as a president, suggesting that belief in God is a value.

However, the complexity of societies makes the research on social ideology very difficult. To comprehensively study a society’s ideas and values, observing the appearance and behavior of its people is not inclusive enough. Value’s incarnation is very complex. And so is Idea’s. There are many other aspects to show the value of a society, such as the media, the popular books, the music that people like, the political system and so on. So we need a more scientific way to learn a society.

To sum up, just as the speaker’s position, ”The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests.” We can acquire much about a society’s values and ideas by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. But this means is limited. Only if we use a more comprehensive and in-depth way can we know a society’s values and ideas deeply and comprehensively.
