TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."
In this argument, the author recommends that once Ann Green was elected that the environmental problems would be solved. To substantiate the standpoint, the author provides the background of Frank Braun so as to prove the person have not achieved his responsibilities well, along with the detail reports about the local environmental problems. Such evidences and facts would seem to be plausible at first glance, though they are flawed by some fallacies and unwarranted assumptions. Three reasons are stated as follows.
To begin with, consider the depiction about the environmental problems in Clearview, which was regarded as the result of malpractice of the former town council, including Frank Braun, apparently there are some defects worth paying attention. Is there any correlation between these seemingly serious problems and the growing number of factories? Perhaps the source of air pollution is another neighboring town for the transmission by the force of wind, on the contrary the local factories do obey the decrees of environmental protection. And the phenomena that the number of patients who got treatments has increased might due to the epidemic respiratory disease, not the results of air pollution, let alone the pollution brought about by the factories. In short, these reports cannot convince me about the facts about environmental problems, unless ruling out other possibilities.
Secondly, the author assumes that now that Frank Braun is the member of the Clearview town council, which has the accountabilities for the environmental problems according to the argument, his ability of administration and conception of environmental protection should be doubted. Nevertheless, though the individual of a certain group would share the common property and characteristic, hardly could we classify them to the same category. Even if the council has not realized their commitments about the environmental protections, Frank Braun might be the person who insists the beneficial conviction to propose and implement the relevant programs, or disapprove of the projects underlying latent perils, which cannot be indicated from the argument. Therefore, without taking a comprehensive assessment about Frank Braun, the recommendation is in shortage of something persuasive.
Thirdly, as a corresponding to the recommendation, I doubt whether Ann Green could outshine Frank Braun at the work focusing on environmental protections. There is no detail information about the persons' achievement or the acknowledge of his ability that can testify the assumption if Ann Green replaces Frank Braun, the resolve of environmental problems would be guaranteed, so the author definitely draws a arbitrary conclusion. Besides that, a qualified mayor not only demands the conceptions about the environmental protections, but other important factors such as the administration capacity, the public impression, etc. If the author tries to make a convincing conclusion, such information should be added to help me evaluate better.
In sum, the argument is unwarranted and oversimplified. To make a better recommendation, the author should provide more detail and specific information about the condition of the local pollution and the background of these two candidates. Additionally, I would like resort to a rounded gauge provided by the author to better assess the advocating of Ann Green. |
