The letter to the editor begins by stating that residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council. The author gives his (or her) reason that the current members of the council are not protecting the environment. To support this conclusion, the author points out the facts that the number of factories has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percents more patients with respiratory illnesses. And the author asserts that if Ann Green is voted, the environmental problems will certainly be solved.

The author’ consciousness for environment protection is worth us respecting, however, the evidences lend no support to the council’s ignoring protecting the environment. And there are several flaws in the letter.

First, the increasing number of patients with respiratory illnesses may not result from the factories’ doubling. The author ignore the other alternatives may cause respiratory illnesses, such as climate, infectious diseases and so forth. Also, the development of industry is necessary of a district, which may be incarnated on the number of factories. The government can take actions in various ways to prevent the negative effect on the environment that caused by the development of industry, such as establishing nature reserves, planting more trees and applying other ecological projects, but not by limiting the number of factories. So the author unfairly makes the conclusion that the council didn’t protecting the environment.

Moreover, the assertion that the residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green rather than Frank Braun stands on the presumption that Frank Braun doesn’t have environmental awareness. However, even if the majority of the members of council really don’t pay attention to the environment, it still can’t be claimed that Frank Braun don’t. No evidence lends support for this presumption. As for Ann Green, all presented about her is that she is a member of Good Earth Coalition. How can the author know she will certainly solve the environmental problem in Clearview? Environmental problem is important and also complex. And there is no fact suggests that Ann Green has the willingness or the ability to solve it.

The mayoral election is a serious thing for each responsible citizen. More complete understanding is needed before choosing the candidate. There are many other things needs to be take into consideration but not only the candidate’s attitude towards the environment, for example, the awareness to improve the level of education, the ability to improve medical systems and so on. Therefore, the author should make more investigation about the candidates and make a more responsible claim.
