TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

The speaker asserts that students should bring a certain extent of skepticism to whatever they study and should question what they are taught. Although the speaker overlooks certain instances when undue skepticism might do disservice, considering the merits skepticism have brought to our society, on balance I agree that students should be skeptic about what they learn. Affluent examples in area of science and religion can support my view.

Turn first to the science area. Skepticism plays an unalienable role in the development of science. Consider Darwin, by being skeptic about God creating everything, he developed his theory of Evolution, successfully illustrated myriads of phenomenon which cannot be explained before. Then consider Ervin Schrodinger, by questioning whether the electrons are point particles, he developed the theory of three-dimensional wave of electrons, contributing to the development of physics. The essence of development, that is to bring about better one requires skepticism that questioning the old idea and notion, substituting an old theory by a new one that is more valid.

Turn next to the area of religion. Skepticism helps to bring about a better religion environment where religion can be prosperous. Take the example of Martin Luther, Luther was skeptic about the notion that freedom from God's punishments could be purchased with money, he brought his new notion that salvation can be earned through faith in Jesus. This notion avoided religion to turn off to a mere machine of collecting money for the church.
By being skeptic about the justice and reasonability of the religion, Luther contributed greatly to the religion.

Considering the merits of skepticism bring to our development of society, no matter in area of science or religion, we should encourage students to keep question what they are taught.
However, we should not overlook that undue skepticism may do disservice for students.

For science, the development is actually a hierarchical process. Say, Ervin Schrodinger Equation was based on Einstein's Quantum Theory and Louis de Broglie's hypothesis that moving particle has an associate wave. Students should comprehend a certain basic principles to develop further inquiry. Query how can a student learn mathematic without acknowledging the basic rules about adding and multiplying and so on? Query how can a student do more research in chemistry without acknowledging the periodic table of elements?

For religion, the development is on basic premise of faith. Undue skepticism about the existence of god only brings doubt, even faintness of spirit to committed theology students. In the bewildering of the existence of god, theology students may desperately turn to psychiatry and drugs, no mention how to dedicate to the religion.

In sum, since the essence of development, no matter in science or in religion, lies in a certain extent of skepticism, students should be encouraged to question what they learn. However, considering the hierarchical process of science development and basic premise of faith in religion, we cannot overlook that undue skepticism can be counterproductive.
