TOPIC: ISSUE43 - "To be an effective leader, a public official must maintain the highest ethical and moral standards."
Leader is someone who organizes fellows and handles the whole performance in a certain organization or group. If he or she has done a good job, he or she receives the most appreciation, or otherwise the most blame. Commonly speaking, the level of a leader's ethical and moral standards is very critical to his or her leadership and thereby the well-going of that organization, but, maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards seems to be impossible and there is something more important besides ethical and moral standards to be an effective leader.
Generally, the ethical and moral standards play a substantial role in the leadership, which makes an ordinary official outstanding and be a leader. As signed in one's character, a high ethical and moral standard is admired by every one and people are willing to corporate with such person, which guarantees the orders conducted fluently. For instance, Mating Luther King was one of the leaders of civil movement in 1960s in America. With high spirit and in person demonstration, he leaded the African American to strive for their civil rights that was being respected like a man as others in the country, which moved a lot of people to struggle together with them even including the white. The Mating Luther King Day in America is not only to respect his death but also his glorious moral and spirit that always figure to a bright future for the American.
However, maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards is difficult and necessary as no one is perfect, so is leader. No public official dares to claim that he obtains the highest ethical and moral standards and also nobody will convince. Sometimes the flaws of moral in a leader's life don't diminish the achievements and evaluation of him or her. For example, no one can deny that Bill Clinton is a good leader during whose presidential term the economy of American endured a rapid growth from the economical recession, though he had some scandals of improper physical connection with his secretary. And he still has a high reputation among the public. Therefore, when the mistake is not harmful to the public even it is against the high standard moral, people will understand and judge the person objectively.
Furthermore, to be an effective leader, besides the high ethical and moral standards, the ability to be a leader and, more important, the willingness to receive the supervision are significant. For example, Napoleon Bonaparte was an excellent military leader who boasted an unparallel military capability and successfully built up the French Empire and once enlarged the border of France to the longest that France has ever had. But he failed to keep his success because of lacking supervision along with his cruel dictatorship over the public. On the contrary, the founding fathers of America, who leaded the entire American people to independence through the tough war with the UK, set up a system that made sure the supervision over each other of the three most fundamental national institutions-president, congress and the chief justice of the supreme court.
In sum, a successful leadership includes a lot of merits and favorable conditions, and high standard of ethics and moral is one of them but not limited. And I believe that high standard of ethics and moral is naturally containing in the character of an effective leadership but not something demanded. |
