It is true that faculty work outside academic, in professional work related to their fields, is useful, but how big the promotion primarily depends on the specific academic area. In fields which outside work is appropriate, I intensely agree with the assertion: faculty will gain in a variety of aspects when combine academic exploration with real-world experience.

Before discussing the statement, we should limit two respects. First,in certain academic fields there is no professions pertinent. For instance, what should literati and philosophers do outside their academic world? Secondly, in any case, going too far is as bad as not going far enough,redundant outside work may harm to instruction as well. This is especially true in mathematics. If a mathematician appears at either security analysis or accounting institute the whole day,  it has no differences with economist  or accountant.

Besides these two qualifications, I strongly agree with the speaker’s assertion that it is advisable for university faculty to work outside the academic area in pertinent professional positions. There are three obvious profits of doing so.First, to keeping abreast with the pace of information changing requires professional work. As the technological advancement, social changes and academic progress is so immense that knowledge you have acquired and contained in recently published book often delay current developments. During working in the field,the new-born things can be learned, and sharing opinion and experience with workmate will promote the research in their fields.

Secondly, working as a professional,  professor can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that area make clear their career planning.A experienced professor is better able to provide up-to-date information about what professional work required,  even about current job market. After all,  schoolmates and colllage career planning organizations are neither equipped nor  adequately experienced to provide such specific advice to students.

A third benefit has to do with faculty’s mental attitude and temperament. In my point of view as a student, professors who are actively engaged in their fields come to class with fresh vision and a infectious passion about the subject at hand. Moreover, they bring to their students  real-world and practical example of the principles and theories discussed in textbooks, even inspire some students to pursue the area as career.

In last analysis, apart from specific academic areas in which related job is needless or useless,  it is true that academic research is the main duty of students and faculty, but sprinkle with professional work will enrich their career to further their progress.
