In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.



As the speaker referred that in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, it is advised that all the faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach. It is true that people with high education and high quality tend to be more willing to develop themselves in all fronts. In my opinion, as for the faculty in college and university levels, they are almost high-educated, and working outside their academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach is not only helpful to the their teaching work but also beneficial to self-development.

Since everyone has their own area of expertise, concentrating efforts on the specialty makes one
perfect in certain area and as a result promotes the development of the academic research. All the academic researches need long-lasting endeavor and require scholars equipped with deep academic background. With the previous acknowledge, researchers can be easy to get into the work and the academic work can go through smoothly as well. It is an interaction in the academic world which stimulates the instruction.


Admittedly, when the academic activity develops to some certain extent, there always exists the situation that the boundary between the academic areas becomes vaguer and vaguer. That means to perfect the familiar academic research requires methods or ideas from all the academic aspects. It’s a progress of combination and digestion. Let’s take a great philosopher as well as a well-known mathematician- Leibniz as example. Leibniz firstly showed his talent in philosophy, however, after deep research in philosophy, he found his another interest- mathematics. Then he devoted himself to the study of mathematics with his brain full of physiological ideas and created calculus which affected almost all science study field. From the story of Leibniz, it’s not hard to find the interaction and benefits of the combination of different academic fields. Through this progress, different subjects bounce together and create new findings.

And for researchers, they always have a mission and responsibility to improve the academic standards. However, besides this, good-educated researchers tend to be eager to pursue the realization of the self-perfection. This sense encourages them to widen their views and absorb more information and knowledge. Furtherly, it is the ability that they have achieved in their major learning that speeds up the learning of knowledge of other fields. It also reflects that leaning seems more a method than a pile of limited knowledge.

We always define the education in colleges and universities as a efficient and effective way to train men for profession. However, we have to admit that to achieve the goal, firstly we should qualified educators-that means the faculty themselves should not only be perfect in their own specialty but also be all-rounded person in other related fields.

[Mary2]莱布尼茨的例子不很妥当。因为题目是分析应用职业经验是否对学术教学有益,比较切题的例子有“兼职从事应用数学职业对高等数学教学是/否有帮助”,等等
