Artists cannot live without earning the attention of others. Actually, most of the artists really do not go far from that, but we have to admit that what the arts want to express does not exactly those hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Arts, at any time, could contain much more plentiful content which their society in reality could have.


To begin with, the masterpieces and their authors in the history did not simply cater to the flavor of the public, on the contrary, they tried to lead the majority to a new way to look at their world. In other words, the first class of the arts are not the ones which reflect their time and society, but create and remold a fantastic mental world which people have not been before. For example, the paintings of impressionism are not similar with any artistic streams before and people at the time may not enjoy their unique style at first glance. However, the impressism has finanlly become an irreversible pandemic in many fields of a whole time. Not only the other painters, but also the musicians and movie makers have begun searching their intuition by seriously scrutinizing those works.

Maybe some people will believe that the reason why impressism will become popular is this style really revealed the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society at the time. People would feel the excellence of these masterpieces just because these works have really aroused and catered the potential feeling of them and the viewers just do not know how to express. Although this kind poinions may seem reasonable, actually, it does not, and also uncovers an important paradox of the statement above during its whole reasoning. If the hiddenn ideas and impulses of a society really exist, who could people know them, exactly? Perhaps, defenders will maintain that it is the temporary temporal arts reveal the hidden ideas. Even so, we have to point out that if the ideas have become prevalent in the arts at the time, how could it be called “hidden”? The realization of the value of art creature relies on such a basic condition that, at least, the work should be known and understood by some people, which clearly conflict with the words “hidden”. After all, no matter how we define the concept of “hidden”, what we make sure is that the well-understood thing cannot be attached by”hidden”. Therefore, according to the reasoning above, unless the ”hidden” become a relative concept, which means the “hidden” could only be understood and referred to the condition some people know and some do not, the whole statement would completely fall into the paradox and self-proving.

However, even if we loosen the concept of the “hidden”, the statement still seem unpersuasive as it is. At least, some of the arts work, espeicially those contained in the popular culture, just try to make people feel easy. What they want to express could not be more clear, which are just common wishes of common folks. In contrast, the intention of this kind of arts may not summarized by the statement.

To sum up, the statement could only apply for some extreme cases. According to our reasoning above, maybe only some of the arts would reveal some of the impulses of the society, which are not noticed by the majority. In most of cases, arts are quite different from the description of the statement.
