音乐的定义：Art is the product of creative human activity in which materials are shaped or selected to convey an idea, emotion or visually interesting form.
1.绘画方面，每个时代都有反映时代精神的作品。毕加索的Gunieca和 the dove of peace.
2.文学方面，Dante 的神曲 委婉地批判了中世纪的愚昧主义以及教会统治的腐败，讴歌了人文主义。
3.音乐方面，民歌表露了平民的思想和感受，如美国的蓝调反映了黑人所遭受的耻辱，充满了忧伤的情绪。
I agree with the contention that arts can reflect the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. One does not have to go very far to see the truth of this statement. Though it is mainly through official propaganda that the mainstream of ideas and values of a society is transmitted, there is a wide spectrum of thoughts and emotions which do not get expressed by any other means than arts. Besides, what make arts stand out is that they can imply things that are reppressed by the government.

The word art can refer to the visual arts, including painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, decorative arts, crafts, and other visual works that combine materials or forms.
In the realm of painting, styles change through time and artists introduce new materials, techniques, subject matter, and purposes for art. Every age has its own works that reflects the spirit of that time. During the Spanish Civil War, Pablo Picasso's Gunieca, which depicted the misery of a town in the Basque region of north-central Spain bombed by German planes one of Picasso's most famous paintings. It reveals  strong denouncement against the fascist atrocities. In 1950, to commemorate the World Peace Conference,he drew a famous pigeon, called the dove of peace to reflect the innermost desire of worldwide people for peace. It is the trend to call for peace for the people, so the dove of peace is continuously the symbol of peace.
In literature, writers and poets can imply the deepest desire and trend of the contemporary society. No one could deny the contribution of Dante, who was a representive of Renaissance. In his immortal works of art-- Divine Comedy, he opposed obscurantism and social corruption of religious hierarchy in the Middle Ages euphemistically and expressed the tendency to pursue truth. In his view, it was unfair that the nature of human was repressed by the canons of the church. Although his opinions was transmitted though metaphors, it greatly motivated and represented the souls of people in that period.
Let alone the function of music, which is the epitome of a given time. The folks reflected the feelings and thoughts of the populace. A case in point is the bules, which belongs to the African-American music, evolving in the United States from the spirituals of African slaves along with work songs, praise songs, field hollers, shouts, and chants. The use of blue notes, as well as the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics, are indicative of the blues' West African pedigree. Informal as it is, the conveys the African-Americans' anger against shame and humiliation.”
From what has been discussed above, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that Paintings, literature and music, whether they are official or not, can reveal the deepest ideas and impulses of a society.
