TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

From this argument, the author cites that women should be prescribed kappa opioids, which is a kind of pain medications, while man should not; and in addition, the author suggests reevaluate the effects of all medications' difference between women and men. That is because of the different response from women and men who are prescribed the kappa opioids. However, the reasoning seems like reasonable; but when we review it again, we would find it problematic.

Firstly, the author claims that owning to the effect of the kappa opioids are much greater women than men, men and women experience pain very differently from one other. However, the author have not yet given the 28 men and 20 women's details such as their ages, their former treatment about the pain problems, the information about their wisdom teeth extracted treatment. These details' difference may cause their different feelings about the pain. Even if the situations of all the men and women are the same, women might think it more painful than men when they are suffer from the same extent of pain. Even if it is different from men to women, the informants are too few to represent all the patients. Thus, the author should give more such evidence about the informants' information, the relation of these informants to other patients, the experience difference of women and men.

Secondly, the kappa opioids are only one of the painkillers which are only used for wisdom teeth extracted in this argument. Kappa opioids might be the painkiller which could only effect for the wisdom teeth extracted. Or, the other painkillers could be effective in other kinds of pains but only except the wisdom teeth extracted. So that, the effect of kappa opioids could not be representation of other painkiller, let alone all medications. It might be effective only if this kind of painkiller was used to wisdom teeth extracted. Unless there are enough evidences shows that the effects of almost all medications are different, the reevaluation is not valuable.

To sum up, the author's suggestion would be a good idea for both the patients and doctors as long as the research on the different effect between women and men was proved to be creditable, as long as the dosage of kappa opioids was proved to be useful and effective to women whenever they need some painkiller; as long as the evidence was given that not only the painkiller but also the other medications are different from men and women.
