TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.
"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."
The author of this recommendation, was trying to persuad to replace the current president Pat with a new one, Rosa to ensure a future increase of profits, and he pointed out some seemingly reasonable facts to support the argument. However, there was some logic fallacy that render the recommendation untanable.
First of all, the manager relied the decreasing profits on the leadering efficiency of the president, Pat, which is an ungrounded assumption. Profit decrease could be due to a various factors, such as lack of investment or labour forces. It is entirely possible that Pat had done everything to improve the situation of the company with her long-accumulated experiences, so that the profits did not diminish as much as it could have been. The recommendation did not exclude other possible reasons that may lead to the declining profit before attributing it to the leadership of Pat.
Yet asking for Pat's resignation, disregard of other workable measurements, is also unreasonable. Such measurements as to improve the present situation might include: making more detailed marketing plans; enrolling talented and experienced workers; make new contrasts with the providers to reduce the cost. Moreover, if Pat is forced to make hasty resignation, it could means other personnel shifts within the whole company which will render the company less stable, thus not likely to make profits.
Even though a new appointment can solve the problem, Rosa Winnings, the president of a jewelry company, did not need to be the only candidate. Provided that toys are subjected to children and jewelry is adults' favorates, perhaps someone who had more managing experience in toy market would be more adequate than Rosa. Even if Rosa's current company is making increasing profit, the manager's assumption that the toy company under the new leadership will make a revered profit trendency is still a unrealistic illusion.
Finally, the suggestion that paying Rosa the salary twice more than Pat is a worthwhile bargain will not turn out to be true because the manager failed to consider all the nagative influence it will bring. Perhaps higher salary earned by the presidents will cause a general dissatisfaction among the staff and reduce the productivity. The manager's simply ignoring the side-effect of the new assignment will therefore lead to a still faster falling trendency of profits.
In sum, the manager's recommendation for replace of the president is not sufficiently supported. If they are to expect rising profits in the coming months, clearer evidence should be provided before the decision is made. These evidences to better support the recommendation may include:(1)the decreaded profit is due to the Pat's inadequate leadership (2)in-depth survey that the personnel reassignment won't cause upset in workers (3)Rosa has the ability to run as effectively a toy company as a jewelry company.
