这篇没限时。。。
题目: 144 "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. "
Artists and critics are often talked together. The speaker asserts that it is the artist rather than the critic who gives the society something of lasting value. But in my point of view, this assertion overlooks the critic’s effects in introducing long lasting arts to the public. Thus, I am convinced that both the artist and the critic are playing indispensable roles in the creation of valuable arts.
Arts, generally presented as beautiful forms providing pleasures and instruction to the society, are usually distinctive expressions of the artists. Most master pieces had been achieved by a long time efforts of the artists. Moreover, high-value artistic works are reflections of artists’ life experience and profound thoughts of living, the universe, regions, human cultures and so on, such things are everlasting topics in the human history. A painter may spend all day long focusing on his drawings ignoring any other surroundings. A sculptor may walk around his uncompleted sculpture day and night only to make sure every hairlike detail has been carved perfectly.
Doubtlessly, the artists present valuable works to the public with their selfless endeavors and
hark thinking.
They are the direct creators of arts.
Ostensibly, the artist makes great efforts in creating long lasting works, but the critic also contributes a lot. On one hand, critics help to push on the development of artistic theories. Let’s take the Impressionism as an example. In late 19th century, a school of French painters whose works failed to be chosen on display, held a independent exhibition in Paris. The exhibition was to put a cat among pigeons. They got pungent criticism from many critics. And the term named as Impressionism, which is widely known to us now, was coined by the critic Louis Leroy at that time. On the other hand, critics also help artists to improve their works.
A real critic has not only knowledge of arts but also sensitivity and insights towards art trends. Especially for young artists, professional advices from experienced critics can help them to make bigger progress in the future. Therefore, we cannot ignore the indirect but crucial effects
of critics in
making everlasting arts come into being.
Critics also work as deliverers between valuable arts and the society. As said before, master pieces imply some deeper meanings under the appearances.
Sometimes these intrinsic values are hardly recognized by common persons if they learn nothing about the backgrounds or the makers’ original intentions, so that critics with professional knowledge are needed as translators to convey concerning information to the public. Without critics’ excavation, Van Gogh and Matisse may have been submerged, then the public would never realize how precious their paintings are.
Based on the discussion above, the artist devotes his whole life to create insightful and beautiful forms of arts, while the critic always plays the role as a judge of talents and a deliverer of art works to the society. If the two act in close coordination ,they would surely bring plenty of art creatures to the society.
