Advantage ofcompetition for human society

Competition is an inevitable result of human society. Itcreates tension between people, groups regions and countries. More importantly,on the other hand, competition plays a crucial role in human’s progress fromthe past all the way to the present. Competition is a key factor of forming themodern world; and has led to technological breakthroughs and increasedproductivity. In addition, competition foster to cooperation. There will not beany cooperation if there is no competition in the first place. In conclusion,being competitive and cooperative provides the most efficient outcome for oursociety.

Take China as a regional example, in the end of 1970s: DengXiaoping – the president of China started to free the Chinese domestic marketto the world. In short, the policy introduced competition into the Chinesemarket. As a result, compared to being an isolated economic entity, China wasfacing the competition in all kinds of industry from other global competitors.Furthermore, with certain competition, the comparative advantage is derived.Take the trade relationship and between U.S. and China as an example. TheChinese have the advantage of producing lots of light products because of cheaplabor and resources. The “invisible hand” of the market will let the producerchoose which products are really competitive in the global market. This is thenatural function of the competition. On the other hand, the U.S. willautomatically focus on producing high-end products like software and airplanesdue to their own comparative advantages. Then the cooperation plays a role.Free trading can help cheap light products flow into the U.S. and high-end technologicalproducts into China. This will improve both American’s and China’s economies.Mutual benefits can be derived from this situation. In addition, bothindustrial specialization and division of labor can improve the society’sproductivity as a whole. Conversely, before the policy had been installed, themain reason for keeping the foreign competitors out of the market was toprotect the domestic market. As a result, the profits of the company will beguaranteed. Without strong competition, the company will have less incentive tocontinue making better products and improve the productivity.

Concerning the issue above, I draw the conclusion that competitionworks as a positive force push the society forward. It improves human’sproductivity on a collective level and creates the opportunity for cooperation.
